Strahm has a high potential ceiling, and if that third pitch doesn’t come in right away, he is likely more valuable in the bullpen. But given his age, he has time to work on the third pitch, get some more MLB experience, and to learn his craft. And in 2018, he will likely take Vargas’ spot in the rotation, with the offseason and Spring Training to stretch out.
