NW Arkansas Naturals 4 San Antonio Missions 1

Bubba’s back and the Naturals are streaking. Just a week after Missions starter Kyle Lloyd blanked NW Arkansas for six innings they got after him and pushed him out after just three innings. The Naturals connected on two doubles, a pair of triples and a Corey Toups home run as part of eight hits and four runs off the starter in this go round. Outfielder Bubba Starling was back in the lineup making an impact after missing ten days with a heel injury, going 2 for 4 with his league leading 13th double of the season. The four runs were plenty for starter Ashton Goudeau and the bullpen as the Naturals staff didn’t allow an earned run on the night.

Greensboro Grasshoppers 3 Lexington Legends 0

Not much going offensively for the Legends Tuesday, going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position in getting shutout. Starter Emilio Ogando fell victim to the lack of offense, taking the loss despite giving his team a quality start over six and one-third innings. The lefty hit the zone with 62 strikes among his 90 pitches, falling victim to a solo home run in the 1st and a walk that came around to score after he left in the 7th.

Albuquerque Isotopes 12 Omaha Storm Chasers 4

Mike Minor’s reintroduction to Triple-A hasn’t gone well in his two rehab starts. He’s surrendered 11 runs, including his seven that he allowed Wednesday. The Isotopes collected nine hits off Minor on their way to a 16 hit and 12 run night that included at least one run off each Omaha pitcher. Despite good nights at the plate for Jorge Bonifacio and Balbino Fuenmayor, it wasn’t enough as just four Chasers hitters collected hits on the night. Outfielder Bonifacio continued his stellar stellar play this season with a pair of home runs and a pair of walks.

Going into their game Wednesday, the Naturals offense had struggled in the past eight contests, scoring just 17 runs while going 3-5 in that stretch. Things unfortunately didn’t change much in this one as the offense could muster just one run on four hits, losing a close affair while the team went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position. The one run would make a loser out of spot starter Austin Goudeau despite a quality start that saw the tall righthander allow just two runs on three hits during his six innings. The biggest blow to Goudeau was a solo home run allowed to former prospect Mike Olt in the fifth inning, Olt’s fifth home run of the season. The same two teams will face off tomorrow in the rubber match of the series, lefty Erik Skoglund will try to build on his six scoreless innings during his May 21st start.

The Blue Rocks offense got things going early and often enroute to a convincing win over first place Lynchburg in game two of their series. The league’s second lowest slugging team packed a punch with two home runs and a pair of doubles while collecting 14 hits on their way to nine runs. Two runs came across in the first, another in the second, and a pair of solo home runs by Brandon Downes and Wander Franco highlighted the third to give Wilmington a 5-0 lead. After Lynchburg drew to within 5-3 after five, the Rocks tacked on a pair of insurance runs thanks in part to a Hillcats throwing error that allowed first baseman Josh Baneulos to reach prior to scoring on a Cody Jones force out. It was a good night for Jones and starting pitcher Corey Ray who were both offering their first contributions since getting called up from Low-A Lexington. Jones went 3 for 5 with a run scored and two driven in, while Ray got the win with three earned runs (5 R) over five and two-thirds.

Entering Wednesday’s game with an 8.80 ERA, Nolan Watson was looking to build on his five inning scoreless outing last time out. After working a perfect first, Watson ran into some bad luck in the second when a swinging bunt lead off the inning. The bad luck continued when Ben Johnson misplayed a single into a triple and another ball blooped into right, scoring two runs in the inning. From there Watson created his own bad luck, walking three in the third while giving up a two-run home run in the inning to get himself lifted after just those three innings. The Intimidators didn’t stop there, scoring seven runs over the next three innings to put the game well out reach for the Legends. Catcher Chase Vallot committed two throwing errors and allowed three passed balls as his struggles behind the dish continued.
