The Sky Sox have the Chasers number so far this season, defeating them on Wednesday for the seventh time in eight games.

Struggling starter Josh Staumont had his best start in some time, working 5.2 innings and allowing two runs (1 ER). The erratic pitcher walked four and uncorked a wild pitch to push a runner into scoring position for the earned run allowed.

Other than Dean Anna’s three hits, the Chasers offense struggled in the good run environment, scoring just one run and recording six hits total in the game. Reliever Eric Stout gave up two runs after walking three and allowing a pair of hits.

Boxscore Link

After a pair of promotions, the Wilmington bullpen is slightly weaker which may have played a hand in their loss Wednesday night.

Reliever Luis Rico struggled, giving up six runs in his 2.2 innings pushing the Rocks behind each time they pulled even or close.

New leadoff man D.J. Burt had a pair of hits, a walk, stole his 22nd base of the season, and scored a run.

The Legends came up on the downside of an evenly played game Wednesday afternoon.

Each team had 11 hits and a pair of errors, with the Legends connecting on the game’s only home run but coming up one hit shy to the Mets Low-A club with runners in scoring position. The Legends trailed 5-4 after a two-run single in the seventh inning but failed to get hits in both the seventh and eighth frame with the tying run in scoring position.

Lexington’s Marten Gasparini continues to turn around his season with three more hits, pushing his overall average to .242 after his .191 April.

Boxscore Link

The Chukars evened the series up with Grand Junction in a rather sloppy game.

Each team committed three errors which led to multiple unearned runs for both squads. The Chukars trailing 4-3 got three unearned runs in the seventh to take the lead, and Christopher Marte tossed 5.1 innings scoreless to earn the win.

The Royals came up short in their first game against the Braves.

Starter Nathan Webb gave the team a quality start with six innings of three-run ball, but took the loss with too little offensive contribution in support. The right-handed starter tossed three innings scoreless before getting touched for a two-run home run in the fourth.

The Royals came up a run short going 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position to drop to 2-4 on the young season.

Boxscore Link

The Royals got out to an early lead and hung on late.

The Surprise squad quickly put three runs on the board in the first inning, getting an RBI triple from Reymond Lopez, a sac fly by Nick Pratto and an RBI single from Cristian Perez.

Their starter, Josh Mitchell, worked three scoreless innings, striking out three in his second appearance. The offense tacked on four single tallies the rest of the way which helped work around the five unearned runs their defense gifted the Padres.

Catcher MJ Melendez had a big day, going 2 for 5 with his first home run while also tossing out two potential base stealers from behind the dish.

Boxscore Link

DSL Royals 5, DSL Braves 1

The DSL Royals ace, Delvin Capellan, gave up his first earned run of the season in 20 innings, but it didn’t prevent a Royals win.

The two teams exchanged home runs in the first inning, but the Royals homer came with two aboard off the bat of Ismaldo Rodriguez to give them a 3-1 lead. From there, Capellan tossed four scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season, striking out four in the start before the bullpen shut the door.

Round Rock limited the hot Omaha bats to just four hits splitting the final game of the two team’s series.

Having scored 43 runs in their previous five games, Omaha was held scoreless by three Round Rock pitchers while limiting the Chasers to hits by just two players in their lineup. Second baseman Dean Anna and catcher Parker Morin accounted for the four hits, all singles, while the Chasers went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

Starter Christian Binford was victim to the lack of the offense, taking the loss despite giving up just two runs in 7.2 innings of work. It was a nice bounce-back start for Binford after getting roughed up in his last start.

Boxscore Link

The first Double-A start for Foster Griffin was solid as the former first-round pick earned his first win at the level.

The lefty worked six innings while navigating five hits and a walk, despite just three strikeouts and three groundouts. It appeared as if Griffin had given up a game tying two-run home run in the fourth to Peter O’Brien but after the slugger had rounded the bases manager Vance Wilson requested a conference with the umpires and got the call overturned. The lefty took advantage, allowing just a run in the fifth over his final two innings.

The Naturals scored a pair in the second inning on a Luis Villegas single. A solo home run by Elier Hernandez provided a run in the fifth and Jack Lopez’s double plated two more in the ninth to give NW Arkansas all the offense they would need.

Boxscore Link

The Legends had a well balanced effort in Asheville for a second night in a row to pull their record to .500 on the year.

Starter pitcher Ofreidy Gomez went seven innings to match his career high, allowing just one run in that time. The Dominican born pitcher pounded the zone with 64 strikes among his 88 pitches while not walking a hitter on the night, earning eight groundouts and striking out six hitters.

The bottom third of the order drove in four of the Legends five runs, with new addition Rudy Martin hitting his first home run of the year. Reliever Anthony Bender worked around a pair of baserunners to close out his third save of the season.

Boxscore Link

The Chasers offense finally got some things going on Sunday while getting a solid spot start from Christian Binford to even the series in Salt Lake at a game apiece.

Four different Chaser hitters had two hits in the game, with the team sandwiching solo runs in the third and fifth innings around a three-run fourth frame.

In that inning, Omaha received the timely hit they have been missing, getting a two-run single by Dean Anna after a sac bunt by Bubba Starling pushed the runners into scoring position. Catcher Parker Morin, playing in front of a large group of family members, would drive in Anna a couple hitters later with a two-out RBI double

Boxscore Link

The Naturals ran their scoreless streak versus the Travelers to over 31.2 innings with a second straight shutout versus them on Sunday.

Starter Miguel Almonte had to leave with an injury in the second, but that didn’t stop the relievers from taking over and continuing to pile up zeros. Lefty Sam Selman and Reid Redman did the majority of the work, combining to toss 6.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and a walk allowed.

The Naturals scored runs in the first and third on groundouts before a Zane Evans single capped the scoring in the fourth. It appeared Almonte’s injury was some sort of injury to his hand but it wasn’t announced following the game.

Boxscore Link

The Rocks offense came up big towards the end of their finale versus Down East.

With the team trailing 4-3 entering the eighth inning, Wilmington tagged the Rangers affiliate for seven runs in the final two frames to take home a series win.

It was Anderson Miller with a solo blast in the eighth that tied things up. One inning later, Wilmington applied pressure with a pair of walks to start the frame before D.J. Burt’s double gave them a lead. After a Miller single tacked on an extra run, it was Chase Vallot’s grand slam that pushed the lead to six and made a winner out of Wilmington.

A rough offensive day for the Royals affiliates, scoring just 10 runs in their four games but excellent pitching held that up for wins in all four games.

HR Roll Corey Toups (2)

Player Spotlight

The Royals may have found a steal in their 5th round pick from 2015, Andre Davis from Arkansas Pine Bluff. On this night his frame, motion and slider reminded me of former Royals prospect Cody Reed. Working his fastball in the low 90’s, according to the announcer, Davis was able to control the Columbia lineup by attacking the glove side of the plate with both his fastball and slider. The lefty tossed in a few change ups that had some dip, but for the most part he was a two pitch pitcher that stayed in the zone. Past reports had Davis working in the mid to upper 90’s with his fastball. If he is able to work from that velocity he could have a future as a backend of the rotation type or lefty reliever in the major leagues given the slider bite and ability to attack the bottom of the zone.

Game of the Day

Lexington Legends 2 Columbia Fireflies 0

Lefty Andre Davis and Columbia starting pitcher Gabriel Llanes dominated the two lineups to the tune of just six hits allowed over seven innings. The only blemish on the board for the two pitchers was a run by the Legends on Emmanuel Rivera’s single to drive in Chris DeVito following his one out double. The seven shutout innings by Davis ran his scoreless streak to 15 innings after giving up four runs in his first start of the year.

The Legends tacked on a run in the ninth when Rivera and DeVito repeated their single following a double magic, this time with two outs. The win for Lexington improves their record in opening series games to 5-0 on the year, unfortunately they are 0-10 in all other games.

The Chasers pounded out 13 hits in securing a second straight win over Round Rock Thursday evening. Starter Kyle Zimmer left after just one inning of work after giving up a solo home run and striking out a pair. With him gone the Express score another run in the second inning before the Chasers offense got started with a solo home run by Corey Toups and a pair of doubles from Billy Burns and Dean Anna to tie the game up in the third inning.

Two innings later it was Toups and Anna leading the offense again, this time with a double and walk. Coming around on an rbi hit by Ryan O’Hearn and an error by the Express. The final run would score in the ninth on an O’Hearn rbi double while the Omaha bullpen put up zeros from the seventh inning on.

The Royals send Miguel Almonte to Double-A in hopes of helping the talented Dominican corral his immense potential. So far so good for ’17 as Almonte spun six innings of one run ball with no walks in his second start of the year with seven strikeouts. That wasn’t enough to earn the winning decision, but the Naturals would do enough to earn the win as a team.

With game tied 1-1 in the seventh inning Mauricio Ramos would single in Frank Schwindel after a leadoff double, setting them up for the win after the bullpen shut things down.

The Royals 2016 2nd round pick A.J. Puckett put together one of his better starts of his young career on Thursday. Working seven scoreless innings with just one walk allowed Puckett attacked the zone with 58 strikes in 82 pitches thrown. With nine swinging strikes on the even and that solid control he was able to earn a career high eight strikeouts while allowing just three singles to improve to 2-1 on the season. The only run of the game was provided in the first inning on a single by Elier Hernandez to drive in Nicky Lopez.

The Chasers left the park with four home runs to welcome back Jake Junis to the team during Wednesday’s afternoon game. Infielders Corey Toups and Dean Anna got the party started in the third with a pair of solo home runs. After Junis worked five innings, allowing two runs in that time, he was given the lead in the sixth inning on Ryan O’Hearn’s third home run of the year. Catcher Parker Morin would connect on the fourth homer of the day in the eighth, providing enough insurance to claim the win.

The Rocks, for the second straight nigh,t took a lead to the bottom of the ninth only to watch the Red Sox walk-off on them. On this night it was former 1st round pick, Michael Chavis, that did them in, connecting on three home runs. Starter Emilio Ogando navigated most of the lineup, working around six hits other hits, but he couldn’t solve Chavis who hit two bombs off him in his five innings. Despite that, the Rocks had connected on a pair of their own home runs to take a 6-4 lead to the ninth after Roman Collins’ second home run of the season. Unfortunately, Andres Machado stumbled in the ninth, giving up a solo home run to Deiner Lopez to leadoff the inning prior to giving up Chavis’ third blast of the night with a runner on for the Salem win.

The Legends continued their pattern this season of winning the first game of their series, only to drop the rest of the games in the series. This loss occurred with three errors on defense, four stolen bases allowed in five chances, and five hits and three runs off starter Ofreidy Gomez. All while the offense connected on just one extra base hit and went one for five with runners in scoring position to finish off another series loss.

One day after the New Orleans Baby Cakes tossed a no-hitter, they held the Omaha Storm Chasers to just two hits in a Saturday win. Those two hits helped the Chasers cash in two runs as Dean Anna connected on an RBI single in the second inning and a double by Garin Cecchini pushed Anna to third in the fifth prior to a Billy Burns RBI groundout in that frame. It wasn’t enough however as the Baby Cakes used a big day offensively by Matt den Dekker to score four runs. The former Mets prospect had a pair of doubles and a home run to drive in two of the four runs for the visitors. The two teams will square off on Sunday with Omaha sending out Jon Dziedzic.

Excellent pitching keyed a Naturals win over San Antonio on Saturday night. The NW Arkansas starter Christian Binford worked six innings of three hit, one run ball with just two walks allowed before turning things over to the bullpen to shut things down. It was a 1-1 game into the top of the seventh when Terrance Gore doubled, stole third and came home on a bunt single by Jack Lopez to give the Naturals a 2-1 lead. From there, the combo of Sam Selman and Evan Beal closed things out with eight strikeouts (seven retired) and a diving catch by Gore to save the win.

The Blue Rocks were gifted plenty of baserunners during their game with the P-Nats, walking nine times including seven from the Nats starting pitcher Joan Baez in three and two-third innings. Those seven walks paired with a couple of errors and two hits in that time to build a 6-0 lead. From there, starter A.J. Puckett cooled down after a three-run third inning to make it five to qualify for the win before handing things to the pen. Once in Yunior Marte’s hands, the game seem in control as the Dominican righty spun three scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Fellow Dominican teammate Franco Terrero worked around his two walks to close out the ninth for his first save of the year and put Wilmington in position for a series win on Sunday.

The McCoys couldn’t get enough offense going during their latest feud with the Hatfields. Both team’s starting pitchers baffled the opposing squad as Lexington’s Andre Davis twirled six scoreless innings with five strikeouts before leaving a scoreless tie. His opposite gave up a run in the sixth inning but received better bullpen work with West Virginia scoring a run off Grant Gavin and a pair on Walker Sheller to take a 3-1 lead. The Legends (McCoys) threatened in the ninth when Gabe Cancel scored on Emmanuel Rivera’s ninth inning single and an error pushed Rivera to second, but the Power avoided extra innings when Chris DeVito grounded out to end the game.
