Baseball America put out a list of minor league free agents on Tuesday and while most names aren’t likely to interest people, there are quite a few names with past links to the Royals.

First the Royals free agents list is the following
RHP: Pedro Fernandez (AAA), Luis Hernandez (R), Yimaury Pena (R), Jose Veras (Hi A), Kyle Zimmer(AAA)
LHP: Sam Selman (AAA)
C: Parker Morin (AAA), Luis Villegas (AAA)
2B: Ramon Torres (AAA)
3B: Alex Liddi (AA)
SS: Jack Lopez (AAA)
OF: Billy Burns (AAA), Alfredo Escalera (AA), Paulo Orlando (AAA)

I would expect to see the departures of Orlando, Burns and Sam Selman from the organization. In regards to Selman, I’ve heard so many scouts that like his stuff and think he’s got a shot at a major league career, but the Royals have never made the leap in giving him a look. It’s time for his agent to give him an opportunity to succeed somewhere else.

Others with links to the Royals:
Arizona Diamondbacks
Sam Lewis RHP, traded by the Royals for Peter O’Brien. Struggled at Double-A this past season.

Rey Fuentes OF, received an extended look by the D-Backs last season and didn’t hit to what some thought was his capabilities. Likely will kick around the minor leagues as an emergency corner guy as he rides out the prime of his career.

2017 reliever Neftali Feliz is also a minor league free agent after completing his first year without a major league appearance since 2008.

Atlanta Braves
Lane Adams – Former Royals draftee has had his greatest stretch with the Braves and seems like a good fit to resign there.

Chicago Cubs
Casey Coleman – Brief appearance with the Royals in ’14 has struggled the past two seasons.
Terrance Gore – Now that he’s a minor league free agent Gore will likely sign minor league contracts with contenders in hopes to reprise his playoff role as a pinch runner.

Detroit Tigers
Former Royals draftee Kevin Chapman is a free agent going into his age 31 season.

Chicago White Sox
Patrick Leonard was part of the Wade Davis/James Shields trade way back when but entering his 26-year-old season may want to consider a career in the far east.

LA Angels
John Lamb is a former #11 BP overall prospect, but the lefty hasn’t been able to show he can get major league hitters out on a regular basis in his 129.2 innings.

NY Mets
Buddy Baumann, after being signed by the Padres in free agency the lefty has had problems staying healthy. He flashed his talent in ’17 briefly at the major league level and will surely earn at least a minor league deal to reprise that level.

Once again Christian Colon will be a free agent.

NY Yankees
Rey Navarro a middle infielder acquired for Carlos Rosa in 2010 has seen 10 games in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles back in 2015, but struggled this past year in the Yankees system.

St. Louis Cardinals
People aren’t likely to remember Edward Mujica‘s brief stint in Omaha prior to his season with Detroit and this past year with the Cardinals.

San Diego Padres
Very few Royals fans will forget the baserunning of Dusty Coleman during his brief appearance with the team in ’15. Luckily for him, he got a chance to amend that in ’17 with a 27 game stint for the Padres. Going into his 32-year-old season could make it difficult to catch on with a club as the game turns younger and younger.

Infielder Diego Goris, a former Idaho Falls Chukar in ’11 will also become a minor league free agent.

San Francisco Giants
Former million dollar international signee Orlando Calixte is a minor league free agent after 29 games in the majors with the Giants in 2017. The infielder continues to have solid power and limited on-base skills.

Seattle Mariners
A year after being acquired in a trade with the M’s, Ashton Goudeau is a free agent.

Tampa Bay Rays
Mike Broadway was on the cusp of making the major league roster out of spring training last season.

Washington Nationals
The former mayor of Omaha, Irving Falu will turn 36 years old this year after another season in the minor leagues.

Intriguing Free Agents to Possibly Add
Mason Melotakis, an oft-injured lefty that can run a fastball into the low-90s next to his slider. The results in the minors have been decent when he’s managed to stay on the mound. A couple other names to watch have links to the Astros farm system with former pick Asher Wojciechowski, a starter who worked with the White Sox last year. Working mostly in the low 90s, Asher has a good slider that major league hitters have struggled against in limited competition who might have a role in the pen if not help out in a spot start duty while working mostly with Triple-A Omaha to add depth. The second name that could intrigue is Matt Ramsey, a relief pitcher who dominated with Fresno last season, allowing just a 1.13 WHIP in 33 appearances while striking out 54 in 47 innings. As is the case with Melotakis, this right-hander has had trouble staying healthy at times but when on the mound he’s been dominant and could be a pitcher the Royals want to give a preferred minor league deal with a peak at a spot in spring training.

Most of these players are looking at the twilight of their careers but there are always a couple of gems to find and the Royals have done a decent job of unearthing a few in the past. Here’s hoping they can do the same once again.

A late comeback woke up the Chasers offense for a walkoff win Friday night. Scoreless in the first 17 innings of this series Omaha got the monkey off their back in the 8th but trailed 5-1 still. A pitching change by the Bees to Javy Guerra got the Omaha offense ignited in the ninth when the reliever walked Jorge Bonifacio and Hunter Dozier to start the inning. Tony Cruz drove in those two following a Bubba Starling single that loaded the bases. Irving Falu’s record breaking single scored Starling while a sac bunt by Parker Morin pushed the tying run to 3rd and the Falu to 2nd. Omaha’s hottest bat ,Orlando Calixte, quickly stepped up and singled to center to drive in both base runners and walk it off for Omaha. That hit by Irving Falu earlier in the ninth gave Irving the hits record for a player in Omaha, counting both the Royals and Storm Chaser franchises.

Lefty Matt Strahm struggled in his three innings but the Naturals offense propped him up to avoid a loss and earn a win. The Naturals offense exploded in the third through seventh innings, scoring nine runs. Infielder Corey Toups extended his hitting streak with a two hit day while scoring two runs and driving in another while three other hitters had multi-hit games. Newcomer Alfredo Escalera had a three hit day with a two run double and Frank Schwindel hit his 16th home run of the season as part of the win. The win gave NW Arkansas a one game lead in the division over Tulsa.

The Rocks pitchers couldn’t slow down the Salem bats Friday, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits in another loss. Starter Corey Rays struggled in his two innings of work, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks before leaving. Relivers Jacob Bodner and Jake Newberry didn’t fair well either, each allowing two earned runs while Newberry gave up two additional unearned runs. The Rocks scored five runs on 11 hits themselves including Samir Dunez’s 11th home run of the season, his fifth since joining Wilmington.

A good day with runners in scoring position while the Legends piled up the hits on their way to another win. Lexington scored at least run in six of their eight innings with the five through eight hitters doing much of the damage with 10 of the teams 14 hits. Outfielder Ben Johnson drove in two runs for the fourth consecutive game while hitting his fourth home run of the season. The win pushed the Legends to with a game and a half of first place.

The Chukars continued to dominate at home in finishing off the Helena Brewers for a three game sweep Friday. Matt Portland struck out seven hitters in five innings while scattering three hits in his five innings to earn his second win thanks to a big offensive effort. The offense piled up nine runs on 12 hits including three home runs. The first two home runs were solo efforts by Luke Willis and David Edwards but the third homer was a big three run job by Yeison Melo in the fifth that helped put the game out of reach.

Reliever Ismael Maldonado gave up five runs in 3.2 innings, taking the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season.

The Chasers knocked a pair of home runs off their former pitcher, Aaron Brooks, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs scored a pair of middle inning runs and carried it through the late innings. Christian Binford gave up a two run home run in the first inning and a RBI double to Dan Vogelbach in the fifth that was quickly followed by a single to drive him in. Those four runs were enough to saddle Binford with the loss despite a pair of solo home runs from Irving Falu and Hunter Dozier.

Despite just four hits the Naturals earned a win Monday with the aid of nine walks, a couple errors and some productive outs. Rangers star Yu Darvish started the game and struggled with his control early on, walking three in just two innings. The first two walks paid immediate dividends with speedsters Terrance Gore and Raul Mondesi performing a double steal that caused an errant throw into centerfield, allowing Gore to scamper home for the Naturals first run. Wild pitches in the second scored a run and pushed a runner to third base in the third inning that came home on a productive out. Finally a productive groundout by Humberto Arteaga brought home their final and deciding run in the fifth inning. Four pitchers worked the game to earn the win with Kyle Bartsch following Pedro Fernandez to earn the win after Pedro was inefficient in three innings.

Third baseman has struggled much of the season for Wilmington but broke out in a big way Monday. In his first three at bats on the even Franco brought home a run in each, connecting on a sac fly rbi, a single to bring in another and a groundout to bring home a third. That helped Wilmington and pitcher Corey Ray to a 5-1 lead. A huge eighth inning by the Rocks pushed the game away with Franco providing the final blow, a grand slam to finish off a seven run inning and give him seven runs batted in on the day. The runs were more than enough for Corey Ray who tossed a career high seven and two-thirds innings while limiting Potomac to four hits, two walks and one run.

The Legends enjoyed the smaller Asheville park in game one of their series, connecting on three home runs and four doubles to build a big lead and hang on late. The home runs Mike Hill, Marten Gasparini and Jecksson Flores accounted for five of the Legends runs and starter Emilio Ogando tossed six scoreless innings before turning things over to the bullpen.

The Chukars overcame a seven run deficit in their high octane Pioneer league game Monday. Scoring double digit runs for the third game in a row Idaho Falls compiled 12 runs to comeback from a 7-0 down in the second inning, taking a 12-11 lead after seven innings. The Raptors would score a single tally in the ninth and send the game to extras where Meibrys Viloria lit off the fireworks with a walkoff grand slam. The 19 year old catcher continues to impress the Pioneer League, connecting on a league high in doubles (10) and tying for the league lead in home runs (4).

The Royals struggled to get any offense going and dropped a game that snapped their seven game win streak. Just four hits for the Royals while going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. Big 6’6 lefty Andre Davis pitched well, using his low 90’s fastball to complete seven innings but a mistake to Kevin Josephina ended up getting drilled over the fence giving him a loss in the game. Reliever Justin Camp allowed a pair of runs to give the Braves enough cushion to put the game away.

Starter Miguel Almonte had one of those ugly starts that he tosses out every now and then, working 38 pitches, giving up four hits, two walks and lasting just 0.1 of an inning. Reliever Clayton Mortensen stepped in and saved the bullpen some with 4.1 innings of one-run ball but the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate was quiet for only a short time, tacking on four more runs in the their last three innings to separate easily from Omaha. Outfielder Brett Eibner homered for the first time in his rehab stint and added a double as well. Omaha went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position, scoring their only runs courtesy of the Eibner solo home run and a Irving Falu two-run dinger in the 3rd.

Starter Alec Mills had one of his best nights in the minor leagues Monday, but it still wasn’t enough to earn the Naturals a win. The righthander outclassed the Travelers offense for seven innings, allowing just a meaningless single and a no-damage double in his time on the hill. Mills was more than pounding the zone, collecting 62 strikes on 90 pitches while he earning 22 swing and misses in the process. With the swing and misses and the called strikes Alec would set a new career high, striking out 11 while also earning nine groundouts to just one flyout. A solo home run from Ryan O’Hearn in the fourth and a RBI single by Mauricio Ramos in the fifth would give the Naturals a 2-0 lead that they would take to the eighth inning. With Mills out, the Naturals turned to closer Kevin McCarthy to try to get a two inning save. The Travelers would win that battle, scoring a run off McCarthy in the eighth before using a pair of doubles, a single and a fielder’s choice to put two across in the ninth for the walkoff win.

When Josh Staumont is on and in the zone he can dominate. That’s exactly what the Rocks got on Monday night.

The righty K’d 12, walked three and allowed three singles over five innings. He used 96 pitches, 56 of them for strikes. When Staumont can hammer the zone with that type of frequency he can be very difficult for hitters to connect on. Likely he is a reliever over time, but I like the fact that the Royals are taking a patient approach and not rushing him to the bullpen just in case they can iron out the mechanics and make him a starter. With Staumont pitching well, the Rocks offense gave him enough support with a RBI single by Elier Hernandez in the first and a two-run home run for Alfredo Escalera in the third. For Escalera, it was his first home run of the season. The two teams wouldn’t score after the fifth inning, with Jake Newberry continuing his stellar relief work by tossing four scoreless with just one hit allowed in that time.

The Legends staged a late rally to tie this one versus West Virginia just to watch the pen give it back and hang them with a loss. Starter Scott Blewett got touched up for three runs in the second inning, but was able to toss up zeroes in his other four innings of work. The Legends offense would spare Blewett the loss with a pair of runs in the eighth to pull the score even. Shortstop Marten Gasparini did the heavy lifting with a solo home run that tied the game. The Power would flex their own offense soon after, doubling, walking and stealing in front of a single to score twice in the ninth. Lexington wouldn’t threaten in their half of the frame to drop the first game of the series.

A thinned out Chasers roster continued it’s struggles in the field, on the mound and at the plate during the home finale versus Nashville. Second baseman Angel Franco’s throwing error in the 3rd inning of the game lead to five Sounds runs to turn 1-0 Omaha lead into a 5-1 deficit and eventual loss. Lefty Jon Dziedzic had induced a possible 4-6-3 double play to end a bases loaded jam but Franco thought he caught it on a line instead of a bounce, tossed the ball over his shortstop’s head which allowed two runs to come in. Dziedzic was unable to stop the bleeding in the inning, giving up an RBI single and two run triple soon after. The game got ugly in the later innings when Nashville got after a taxed Chasers pen for eight runs over the final four innings. All-time great Omaha Royal and Storm Chaser Irving Falu hit his first home run as a member of the Royals organization since August 2nd, 2013 when he hit a solo home run in the 8th inning. Royals top five prospect Miguel Almonte could pitch out of the bullpen to start the series in New Orleans in an effort to build him back up to starting.

Tulsa Drillers 3 NW Arkansas Naturals 1

The Naturals let a couple opportunities escape them early in the first game of the doubleheader playing a part in the loss. In the 1st and the 3rd innings the Naturals loaded the bases but were able to get just one run to cross. With a 1-0 lead Eric Skoglund was unable to get through the 4th inning without any damage, surrendering five hits and three runs in the inning. The Naturals would get a hit in each of the next three innings but were unable to mount a rally to get the game knotted.

Game 2
Tulsa Drillers 6 NW Arkansas Naturals 4

The second game got away from the Naturals after they had built a early 4-1 lead. Struggling centerfielder Bubba Starling had a good start to the game, knocking in three runs with a pair of singles in the 3rd and 4th innings. After not giving up a home run in 21 consecutive starts and 108 innings starter Alec Mills got touched up for two home runs via Willie Calhoun. The Naturals were unable to keep adding on while Calhoun got after reliever Tim Hill for a double to tie the game in the 5th to finish off Mills line at four runs allowed. For Mills it was the first time that he had given up more than three runs in a game this season and the first time since August 15th of last year. The shortened doubleheader game went to extras where an Alex Verdugo two run home run in the bottom of the 8th won it for the Drillers.

The Rocks were a woeful 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position Tuesday to drop their third straight game to Winston-Salem. The Dash built a four run lead off starter Josh Staumont before the Rocks fought back to get within a run before the outs ran out on them in the ninth. In the final stanza the Rocks loaded the bases with one out in the inning but a strikeout to Elier Hernandez and a groundout by Austin Bailey ended the rally. After an outstanding April, Staumont has struggled greatly with the strike zone, walking 33 in the 28.2 innings since.
