Each team had trouble connecting with runners in scoring position in this one, but the Power did just that, powering up for a win. The Legends used errors to plate both of their runs after an 0-5 effort with runners in scoring position. Solo home runs off Nolan Watson in the first and sixth innings combined with a run on a wild pitch against Watson contributed to the other in the loss.

A fluky inside the park home run paved the way for a Wilmington win on Thursday night. The Wilmington pitching staff did their part on the night, limiting Myrtle Beach to just one run on six hits and four walks as they combined to strikeout thirteen hitters on the night. Starter Ofreidy Gomez’s wavering control limited him to just five innings but he was able to escape four hits and three walks allowed to just one run against in that time. From there, the bullpen of Grant Gavin, Josh Mitchell and Bryan Brickhouse shutdown the Pelican lineup for the final four innings. With the game tied 1-1 into the bottom of the eighth, Nick Heath hit a shallow pop up to left that caused the two outfielders to collide, allowing Chris DeVito to come home from second and the blazing fast Heath to race all the way around the bases for a little league inside the park home run.

The Naturals offense continued their hot run, jumping all over Arkansas starter Johendi Jiminian for eight runs in the first three innings of this one. Four different NW Arkansas hitters had multi-hit games with John Brontsema and Anderson Miller leading the way with a home run and double each. It was Brontsema’s fifth inning home run that pushed the advantage to 9-3 which would be too large for the Travelers to overcome despite five runs off Scott Blewett and a late run off reliever Walker Sheller when he struggled to close the door in the ninth.

Starter Heath Fillmyer could give his team just four innings in this one, allowing three runs in the fourth to end his night in favor of rehabbing Justin Grimm. The Chasers pen kept Iowa off the board for the next six innings but a struggling Omaha offense could muster just a three-run eighth to tie the game. In that inning, a solo home run by Paulo Orlando, RBI double by Humberto Artea and a run-scoring single from Billy Burns provided the three runs. Tied into extras, the Cubs took home the win in the eleventh frame on a single against Brandon Maurer after Omaha failed to cash in on two opportunities with the free runner.

The Rocks received one of Cristian Castillo’s best starts of the season, but a poor offensive output cost them another game. The lefty entered the game with an 8.78 ERA but was able to give a quality start with six strikeouts. The only hiccup came in the second inning when the Nats Telmito Agustin connected on a home run to right with a man on to put the Rocks down 2-0. Outfielder Kort Peterson followed up a big night on Monday with a 4 for 5 effort in this one, including scoring Wilmington’s only run with a third inning double before coming home on Khalil Lee’s run-scoring single. Wilmington would threaten in three different innings including two times with Peterson in scoring position but fail to come through with another RBI knock fall to 5-7 versus Potomac.

Starter Glenn Sparkman gave the Naturals his second quality start in a row, working six and one-third innings with two runs allowed. Having come into the game without a walk allowed, Sparkman handed out his first free pass of the season in the third frame before finishing the effort without another. The Naturals offense pounded out 14 hits on the night, the fifth time in their last six games to do that, which helped them push across seven runs. Infield John Brontsema drove in three runs, two in the second inning with a double and another with a single in the ninth. Newly signed Luis Vasquez finished the game off with three strikeouts in the last inning and one-third, running his total to seven in three appearances for the Naturals.

Veteran Kyle Lohse’s comeback effort hit a bump in Omaha Tuesday night. The right-hander with over 400 major league starts got tagged for 10 hits in four and two-thirds innings leading to seven I-Cubs runs. Those runs were more than enough to put the game away with the Chasers struggling offense collecting just six hits with the former CWS darling Michael Roth limiting the Chasers to just two.

A pair of former Storm Chaser playoff starters faced off in Papillion on Monday. The 2014 PCL championship game starter Aaron Brooks started for the I-Cubs, tossing three efficient innings before running into trouble in the fourth. On the other side, ’14 National Championship game starter Christian Binford was running into similar fourth inning problems.

With the game at 1-0 Iowa, the fourth inning got interesting when Billy Burns dove and came up empty on a sinking two-out line-drive with the bases loaded. The ball got past Burns and all three runners scrambled home to give the Cubs a 4-0 advantage. Omaha answered in their half of the inning with a Frank Schwindel home run (19) and a two-run single by Garin Cecchini to pull within a run. One inning later after the Cubs had pushed their lead back to two with a solo home run off Binford, the Chasers and Schwindel were back at it again off Brooks, this time with a mammoth 437-foot blast (20) to left-center and an RBI single by Brayan Pena that gave the Chasers a 7-5 lead.

Unfortunately, that lead was short lived for Omaha. Reliever Seth Maness gave up a three-run sixth inning that featured a two-run home run by Taylor Davis. The Cubs bullpen would take control of the game from there, retiring the final 11 Chasers hitters.

The Rocks answered a four-run Keys second inning with a three-run frame of their own Monday, but their bats would go silent from there. While the Willmington offense went silent the Keys were playing music with their bats, scoring a pair in the fourth, another in the fifth and two more in the seventh for an easy win.

Most of the damage came on starter Colin Rodgers as the lefty gave up eight hits and walked four while allowing six runs in three innings.

The Chukars got involved in one of those classic high scoring Pioneer League affairs. The two teams exchanged leads five different times prior to extra innings with Billings jumping out to an 8-2 lead through six innings only to watch Idaho Falls comeback and take a 10-8 lead after eight innings. The Reds rookie affiliate wouldn’t mail it in though, scoring three runs to take the lead into the bottom of the ninth. Of course that lead didn’t last long with Darrell Miller Jr. hitting a solo home run to send the game to extra innings.

After the teams exchanged runs in the eleventh inning Billings blew the game open with five runs in the twelfth to finally build a lead that Idaho Falls couldn’t overcome.

The Royals trailed 8-6 into the ninth inning of their third game of four versus the Danville Braves. That deficit was quickly sliced in half thanks to a leadoff single by Jose Sanchez that started the inning and a triple by Seuly Matias. A sacrifice fly by Benji Cash quickly tied the game to push the game to extras. In the tenth, Braves pitcher Cutter Dyals lost control of his pitches following an error that allowed Jose Marquez to reach. With Marquez on, Dyals pushed him to second with a wild pitch prior to Ryan Dale sacrificing him to third. With the winning run on 90 feet away and just one out Dyals did it again, uncorking a second wild pitch that allowed Marquez to race home for the winning run.

The Chasers built a 4-1 lead, but the bullpen blew up to drop their fifth straight.

Rehabbing Danny Duffy worked 4.2 innings in his second start with the Chasers, tossing 66 pitches in the process. The lefty hit the zone with 47 pitches while allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. This start should put him in a position to go 80-85 pitches next time out and get him back to the big club in July before the break.

Trailing 1-0, first baseman Ryan O’Hearn hit a three-run bomb in the sixth to give Omaha the lead. One inning later Frank Schwindel went deep to push the advantage to three, but reliever Malcolm Culver couldn’t deal with the light air. He allowed seven runs in the eighth inning earning Culver his first loss of the year and just his second blown save.

The Naturals’ new guys mixed with the players already in NW Arkansas to power the team to a big offensive night.

Lefty Emilio Ogando improved to 5-5 at Double-A thanks to 15 hits by the Naturals offense and just two runs allowed in his six innings. Three different multi-run innings helped build a 9-2 lead with multiple hits by five different NW Arkansas hitters. Outfielder Donnie Dewees hit his sixth home run of the year, and first baseman Samir Duenez had four hits and a pair of runs driven in.

Reliever Andrew Edwards made it interesting, allowing six runs before Pedro Fernandez bailed the squad out to secure the win.

The Rocks got another good start from Cristian Castillo and a little bit of power for a win versus Frederick.

The lefty dropped his ERA to 2.80 on the season by limiting the Keys to just four hits while navigating his three walks allowed. Allowing just one run, he used the fly ball to earn eight outs while striking out four and nibbling with 58 strikes in 105 pitches.

The Rocks were tied at one after Brandon Downes blasted his sixth home run of the year in the fourth inning and Castillo allowed a run in the sixth. The offense loaded the bases in the eighth and took the lead with a Chris DeVito single through the right side. Matt Tenuta saved the game with a pair of scoreless inning to close out the game.

The Legends built a decent lead and hung on to a slim win over Columbia.

After the two teams exchanged runs in the first inning, the Legends took the lead in the fourth with a solo home run by Joe Dudek and a sac fly RBI by John Brontsema.

The Mets squad put three runs on the board in the sixth to take a brief lead, but the Legends came right back in their half with three runs of their own. After a pair of walks, the Legends tied the game with an error by the third baseman on a ball hit by Marten Gasparini. One hitter later, Rudy Martin gave the Legends a two-run lead with a double that plated both Brontsema and Gasparini, giving Lexington the runs they would need for the win.

The Chukars late comeback paved the way to a win in Orem.

Don Wakamatsu’s son Jake hit his first pro home run in the eighth to tie up the game at seven. Just an inning later Jake left the yard again, this time to give Idaho Falls a 9-7 lead and an eventual win.

Reliever Cody Nesbit worked 3.2 innings to earn his second win of the year.

The Burlington squad couldn’t get anything going offensively and lost a close one against Danville. Just two singles for the Royals and an 0 for 3 effort with runners in scoring position were the culprits.

The lack of offense ruined a good start from Michael Messier who struck out 10 but gave up a pair of solo home runs in his seven innings to drop his second decision of the year.

Boxscore Link

The two Dominican teams each went 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position to lead to a low scoring affair. Trailing 1-0 until the ninth inning, the Royals evened the game up with a one-out single by Brayant Aponte.

That tie didn’t last long when reliever Victor Medina couldn’t find the strikezone. He walked three around a hit by a pitch to push home the winning run for the A’s.

For the second night in a row, the Chasers offense thumped their way to a win over the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate.

All nine Omaha hitters reached base in the game and middle of the order answered the bell with seven RBI in the game. The hitter in that group with the biggest night was designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn who slugged a three run home run in the first as part of a five run frame before doubling in a pair in the fourth inning.

The beneficiary of the 10 runs was pitcher Yender Caramo who got the win despite giving up 10 hits and five runs while striking out just one in six innings. Lefty reliever Eric Stout was solid as he has been all year, working two and two-third innings while allowing just one run in the time to calm things down before Seth Maness earned the save by recording one out in the ninth with the bases loaded.

NW Arkansas Naturals 4 Tulsa Drillers 0

The Naturals finished off a four game sweep of the Tulsa Drillers to pull within a game clinching the first half division win.

In extra innings of the suspended game shortstop, Humberto Arteaga drove in Donnie Dewees after his leadoff double to give NW Arkansas a 3-2 lead. Reliever Sam Selman worked the final three innings with just two baserunners allowed to earn the win.

In the second game starter, Zach Lovvorn worked six and two-third scoreless innings before handing things off the Tim Hill to close things down. Infielder Corey Toups homered in the first and scored in the fifth on a Samir Duenez double to help put the Naturals up 2-0.

Outfielder Donnie Dewees tripled in Arteaga in the sixth before scoring himself on an errant throw for a little league home run. From there Hill finished off the final two and one-third innings perfect to secure the win.

The Blue Rocks continued their stellar pitching on Friday night to win another easy one, this time versus Salem.

Right-handed starter Scott Blewett put together likely the best start of his career, working six shutout innings. Dominating the Salem lineup that time while working around two singles and three walks by matching his career high with 10 strikeouts.

While Blewett was dominating the Wilmington offense was attacking, scoring seven runs from the second through the fifth. Infielder Wander Franco drove in a pair of runs with singles in the second and third innings.

Outfielder Anderson Miller paced the offense with three hits including a double and a triple while scoring one run and driving in another. The Carolina League All-Star has raised his average to .291 while improving his on-base percentage to .382 this season.

The Chasers received another quality start but a bullpen blowup gave them a loss in Memphis.

Omaha’s starter Luke Farrell worked around four walks and four hits to leave with a 2-1 lead after his first baseman, Frank Schwindel, had given him the lead with a fifth inning home run.

Rehabbing Brian Flynn struggled in the seventh when he entered, getting touched up for six hits and five runs as he was able to get just one out in the inning. Things didn’t get better for Omaha in the eighth when Onelki Garcia was worked over for an additional six runs on four hits.

That deficit was too large to overcome and Omaha shortstop Raul Mondesi had his hitting streak snapped at a career high 18 games with an 0 for 4 night at the plate.

The Naturals normally reliable bullpen let them down in their game at Midland on Friday night.

The offense lead by the top two hitters in the order, Jack Lopez and Elier Hernandez helped the Naturals to a pair of big innings in the fifth and sixth to take a 9-2 lead.

Starter Emilio Ogando after giving up a pair or runs in the first inning settled in and tossed another quality start with two run ball over six frames. The lefty since arriving at Double-A now has given the Naturals four quality starts in five tries.

That 9-2 lead was shrunk to just two after lefty Luis Rico was touched up for five runs in the seventh with just one hitter retired in the frame. Reliever Jake Newberry got them out of the seventh and through the eighth but he struggled in the ninth after getting the first two outs in the inning. A single and a double sliced the lead in half before another double tied it up. Now tied the A’s Double-A franchise walked things off with a single by Brett Vertigan.

The Blue Rocks have enjoyed their series in Winston-Salem the last two nights, scoring 21 runs in a pair of wins.

The Rocks went wild in the first inning of this one with nine consecutive hitters reaching base after a leadoff out. The nine hitters helped Wilmington plate seven runs with Brandon Downes plating a pair and Chris DeVito connecting on a single in the inning.

For the big first baseman that single was part of a big night at the plate. In the second he would lumber around for a triple after hitting a ground ball into the right field corner. Two innings later that same corner would be used for a double and just two inning later Downes and DeVito would hit back to back home runs with DeVito completing the cycle. It was just the second cycle in franchise history for Wilmington with the last one coming in 1999 by former Royal Dee Brown.

Those two home runs pushed the lead to 9-3 and three more in the ninth gave Wilmington enough insurance to wind things down 12-6 after the two teams combined for 31 hits.

Giants lefty Domenic Mazza pitch a second complete game against Lexington this season.

After tossing a perfect game in April against the Legends, he beat them in the middle of May with a one run start and was tossing zeroes against them with a 1-0 lead through seven.

In the eighth things started to change when Rudy Martin got a big two-out hit to score John Brontsema to tie the game up at 1-1. After a scoreless ninth for Augusta the Lexington shortstop, Angelo Castellano tripled to lead off the bottom half of the inning. The lefty, Mazza intentionally walked a pair of hitters to try to wiggle out of the threat but Emmanuel Rivera lined a single to right to walk things off for the Legends.
