A pair of Legends pitchers combined to shutout Asheville to even up their series at 1-1. Starter Andres Sotillet put together his third quality start in four chances, shutting out the Rockies farm club for six innings. A three-run fourth inning by Lexington saw the club get three of their six hits in the frame with Nick Pratto singling with one out prior to scoring on a Dennicher Carrasco double. An additional two runs were scored on a Sebastian Rivero single and a squeeze bunt by Marten Gasparini. That run support would be all the offense could give but also all that Sotillet and Holden Capps would need as the pair yielded just one free pass and worked around eight hits in the shutout win.

The Rocks did a little bit of everything in a comfortable win on Saturday against the Red Sox High-A club. Starter Daniel Tillo worked an outstanding six innings in his second start for the Rocks, moving through the first five innings without a hit allowed. The lefty wandered around the zone some, plunking three hitters and walking one in that time but his seven strikeouts allowed him to navigate any problems as he got through six with just two hits allowed. Wilmington’s offense matched his effort with a three-run second, getting a pair on a fielding error and another on a Khalil Lee rbi single. Two innings later Lee was driven in by Gabe Cancel on a rbi single to expand the lead to 4-0. Outfielder Kort Peterson would put up a couple of highlights late in the game, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth and stomping out a Salem rally in the eighth by tossing out Carlos Tovar from right field as he tried to advance to third base on a hit. After dropping the first six games these two played Wilmington has now won two in a row and will search for a series win in Sunday’s effort.

The Naturals countered Midland’s 19 hit effort from Friday night with outstanding pitching and big nights from a couple hitters in the middle of their lineup on Saturday. Starter Zach Lovvorn worked seven innings of one-run ball (0 ER) by turning to the worm burner as the righty helped create 13 groundouts while on the hill. Those groundouts limited Midland to just five hits and a pair of walks while he tossed in five strikeouts as a complement to his night. It was Elier Hernandez and Anderson Miller who helped back Lovvorn as the two corner outfielders combined for seven hits and three rbi. The 4 for 4 effort helped raise Miller’s average to .257 after a cold start to his season. For Hernandez, it was his third three-hit effort in his last four games played while the two doubles give him five extra-base hits in that time period. Reliever Franco Terrero worked the final two innings to push his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings.

Just like the other three minor league teams, the Chasers received outstanding starting pitching with Jonathan Dziedzic working six scoreless innings of two-hit ball. Only one of the two singles against the lefty advanced to second and neither got further than that as he worked an efficient 67 pitches, hitting the zone with 47 strikes while earning nine groundouts in an impressive performance. The Chasers offense didn’t provide a lot of backing but just enough with a first inning groundout from Frank Schwindel that scored Billy Burns after a leadoff double and a sixth inning solo home run by Adalberto Mondesi. Reliever Wily Peralta worked the final three innings to earn the save, yielding one run in the process.

Adalberto Mondesi 1-3 HR, SAC

The title of this article might seem odd, but as other blogs and this site have pointed out, scouting director Lonnie Goldberg has had some drafts that have hurt the Royals balance sheet and the farm system in the process. This isn’t all his fault, but fans don’t care and the money doesn’t hit the registers if players that perform for a small market team don’t make it from the draft and onto the field at the K.

Now, we already know the first payment on the ’13 draft was a very large one as the Royals turned their second and third picks that season, Sean Manaea and Cody Reed, into a 2015 World Championship with the two as primary pieces in the Ben Zobrist and Johnny Cueto trades. Those flags shall fly forever and the money from that World Series merchandise overflowed for the Royals. While those two turned huge returns, what other players from that draft are of note?

1st Round picks or Eventual 1st round Picks
Hunter Dozier
Sean Manaea
T.J. Zeuch 31st round
Will Craig 37th round

That’s right, the Royals made four selections that turned into 1st round picks. Yes, it’s obvious that Dozier and Manaea were first round picks, but additionally their 31st round and 37th round picks turned into 1st round picks for the Pirates three years later.

Besides 1st round picks what players have made their debuts in the major leagues?
Cody Reed
Luke Farrell
Kevin McCarthy
Glenn Sparkman

So we see the Royals have drafted six players in that draft who have made it to the big leagues so far. The isn’t too bad, though it could be better. Only Manaea and McCarthy have given multiple appearances with contribution and McCarthy has limited upside as a reliever. The other four we’ll just give an incomplete as players who have struggled in limited appearances.

While ’18 will add to the story for Manaea, Farrell and Reed, elsewhere there are bigger impacts to come for a few Royals.

First, there is Dozier who, after a lost ’17 season due to injury, faces the possibility of competing with Cheslor Cuthbert for the third base job or working his way into the lineup as a first baseman. The upside of a big league average regular is still there for Dozier, and some might say that if the Royals dream to compete in ’18 that the upside that he presents might be one of the only ways along with a bounceback by starters in the pitching staff could be the only way they could get there. The 2016 minor league player of the year has 3-4 fWAR upside which is something a few other position players likely don’t have.

In addition to Dozier, this season is a big one for Glenn Sparkman and Jonathan Dziedzic. While Sparkman made a rough debut after a spring training injury for the Blue Jays, lefty Dziedzic looked to be on the cusp of shoving his way into a major league debut before an April injury sidelined this season. With the Royals likely needing innings from a rotation of oft-injured pitchers and additional bullpen pieces, these two could jump to the top of the list of players with a shot to make an impact. In particular, Sparkman and his four pitches with solid 93-95 mph velocity have a shot to be a contributor along the lines of what Jake Junis did last season. While I like Sparkman’s upside more, don’t overlook Dziedzic who, if healthy, has the possibility to grow into a Jason Vargas type crafty lefty if given a chance with his four-pitch mix and high pitching IQ.

This draft has already helped place a flag in the outfield for Dayton Moore and Lonnie Goldberg, but if they want to surprise in 2018 then additional players will have to ring the register once again.

It’s time for a painful reckoning. Even discussing this is not fun. But yes, it is time to prepare ourselves to say goodbye to many of our favorite Royals. Sure, they’ll come back to Kansas City from time to time, wearing different colors, and some people will boo them while others give them ovations for old time’s sake (not surprisingly, I tend to the latter).

While Jerry Seinfeld’s joke that we root for laundry is ultimately proven true, for various reasons, baseball is a little different—seeing players’ faces every day, and especially when they have been Royals since very early in their careers and spent six or so seasons here, makes us feel a little closer to them. We’ve seen them cry, we’ve seen them celebrate, we’ve seen them joke around, we’ve seen them succeed, we’ve seen them fail, we’ve seen them get injured and we’ve seen them overcome long odds on and off the field.

But yes, it is time, or soon will be, for the Royals to trade away their impending free agents for prospects. You might think it’s too early to punt on the season. I mean, Cleveland is only 19-14! But consider that Cleveland is on pace for 93 wins. The Indians won 94 last year, so that’s probably not a fluke. To match that 93-win total, the Royals would have to go 81-48 the rest of the way. Just getting to 90 wins and possibly—possibly!—being a wild-card team would mean a 78-51 record.

The 2015 Royals went 81-51 in their first 132 games, so if these guys magically morph back into that team, then it’s not impossible, and indeed, if we hadn’t seen this team summon up magic against long odds before, this wouldn’t even be a discussion. But have you seen any indication of that happening? Me either.

In a way, it will be refreshing to see some of the current Royals leave. Maybe not refreshing, but a bit of a relief. Of course I’ll miss them, but every strikeout, every popup, every weak grounder to second kind of tarnishes their past glories slightly. Eventually, that will fade and we’ll only remember the winning, but right now it’s like watching your pet get sick.I can’t prove it, but I feel like this team came out of the gate pressing, knowing this was their last go-round as a team. When they didn’t work, they tried even harder, and you can’t succeed in baseball like that. Now they’re…well, not buried, but in quite a hole as I mentioned. I don’t quite understand how more or less the same group that was on top of the baseball world 19 months ago can be one of the worst teams in baseball right now, but that shows you how fast the game can change.

And I’m excited to see some of the younger players get a shot. Bring on the kids, I say. We’ve already seen Cheslor Cuthbert be an effective major leaguer; I’m not worried about his poor numbers this season because I suspect this is the first time in his life he has not played every day. Jorge Bonifacio has shown some ability; let’s see if can make the needed adjustments at the plate and improve his defense. Ideally, we could see Matt Strahm stretched out to become part of the rotation. And those are just the guys already here.

I look forward to seeing Jake Junis, Ryan O’Hearn, Corey Toups, Josh Staumont, Ramon Torres, and Jonathan Dziedzic. And hopefully Hunter Dozier can make it back to the majors when he’s healthy. Oh, and Raul Mondesi again, which brings up the Raul Mondesi Corollary to this desire: I only want to see them if they’ve proven they can handle AAA ball. But the good news is several of those guys are off to good starts in Omaha.

Although the Royals have really only had a couple of full-fledged “youth movements” in franchise history, it has become something of a tradition among Royals fans to look ahead to the up-and-coming players of tomorrow. That was mostly because the players currently on the roster in the dark days were generally nothing to get excited about. This is obviously a different situation, and even after the impending free agents are gone there will still be plenty of links to the glories of the past few years: Danny Duffy, Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, and maybe Kelvin Herrera. But adding some younger players to that group and watching them grow and develop can be fun too.

With a touch of sadness, I say, bring on the kids. It might be painful at first but it’s the only way forward.

One day shy of 20 years since the Triple-A Royals affiliate threw a combined no-hitter, the Storm Chasers came within three outs of their own no-hit effort. Left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic got things started, working five and one-third perfect frames until Ramon Torres’ nonchalant play at short ended in a misthrow, allowing Isaac Galloway to reach via error in the sixth. A walk followed to the next hitter before Dziedzic worked through the sixth and got a couple more outs in the seventh before getting pulled due to reaching his scheduled pitch count. Reliever Bobby Parnell would finish the seventh and toss a perfect eighth frame before turning things to Matt Strahm for the ninth. Facing former Storm Chaser Ryan Jackson, lefty Strahm battled until losing a seven-pitch confrontation when the right-handed hitter singled on a ground ball just inside the first base bag.

The Royals reliever would quickly earn three outs to finish off the game and secure the win, giving Omaha their second one-hit win of this homestand. For Dziedzic, it was his best performance of his pro career and reminded him of his last college start. During that start, he limited Ryan O’Hearn and his Sam Houston State squad to no hits over 8.2 innings.

Leading the offense was Torres with a grand slam in the second inning and Jorge Bonifacio with a home run in the fifth inning. For Torres, it was his third home run of the season after hitting just two in 73 games with Omaha last year.

The Naturals got knocked around by the Houston Astros Double-A affiliate in the first game of their series. Starter Corey Ray gave up a pair of home runs and the bullpen got knocked around during the rout. The Naturals collected 10 hits but were limited to just three runs as only Zane Evans’ first home run of the year went for extra bases. Reliever Tim Hill had a tough go of things, giving up five runs on a walk and five hits in just 1.1 innings.

The Rocks trailed two separate times with lefty Cristian Castillo giving up four runs (3 ER) in his five innings, but that didn’t deter the offense from continuing to put on the pressure in the seventh. In that frame, trailing 4-1, the Rocks received a one-out walk by Chase Vallot and back-to-back singles from Roman Collins and Wander Franco to plate a run and put the tying runners on base. A two-out walk to Colton Frabasilio loaded the bases before Nicky Lopez’s single tied the game. From there, it would stay knotted until the eleventh inning when Franco and Collins paired up once again for one-out singles in front of Jonathan McCray’s double that gave the Rocks a lead and the eventual win.

The Blue Rocks, now 5-5, will head to Salem for a three-game series with the Red Sox affiliate.

The Legends Nolan Watson continued to struggle to limit hard contact in the 13-5 loss on Sunday. The former 1st round pick gave up a home run and four doubles in 5.1 innings while surrendering six other hits and eight runs. Reliever Jose Veras didn’t fair much better, getting knocked around for a dinger and four runs in his 2.2 innings. The middle of the order did pretty much all of the damage for Lexington, collecting nine of the team’s ten hits on the day.

The Chasers ran into a buzzsaw Saturday as former 1st round pick Archie Bradley chewed them up and spit them out over 8 innings of work. The big Oklahoman right-handed starter worked 108 pitches allowing only three hits while striking out nine, preventing the Chasers from mounting much of a threat all night long. Lefty Jonathan Dziedzic fell on the losing end of Bradley’s performance, giving up eight hits and three runs in five innings to drop to 1-5 on the season. Outfielder Brett Eibner hit his third home run in as many games in the ninth but the Chasers were unable to mount any additional comeback.

Naturals pitchers have tossed 18 consecutive shutout innings in the first two games of their series with the Drillers after their victory Saturday. Game two belonged to starter Eric Skoglund and the lefty was on cruise control through his six innings, allowing just two hits while on the hill. Skoglund gave up a leadoff double in the second, retired 12 in a row before a leadoff single in the sixth, and then finished off his inning and start. The Naturals offense had plenty of opportunities to put runs on the board having collected 11 hits on the evening, but needed just one big rally in the 4th to cash in. In that inning, a run of four consecutive singles plated one before Carlos Garcia unloaded the bases with triple that gave NW Arkansas a 4-0 lead. Reliever Ashton Goudeau worked two scoreless innings in his first Double-A appearance. Starting pitcher Alec Mills will start Sunday after making his major league debut last week with the Royals.

Lexington Legends 4 Greenville Drive 0

The Legends scored three times in the fifth inning of game one to push that game out of reach, thanks to solid pitching from Emilio Ogando. The lefty worked around a one out double in the 1st and gave up a pair of solo home runs in the game but really didn’t face much adversity in his six innings on the hill. Former Rice closer Matt Ditman shut the door in the seventh for his first Single-A save of the season. Outfielder Amalani Fukofuka had his hit streak snapped at 11 games.

Game 2
Greenville Drive 7 Lexingon Legends 0

Just four singles and a pair of walks for the offense while Drive rightfielder Trent Kemp hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs in game two. The eight and nine hitters in the Greenville lineup reached base all six times they came to the plate while scoring four runs combined. Tate Matheny, son of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, drove in a pair after homering in game one of the doubleheader.

The Chasers got out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but only had one more scoring opportunity when they loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Whit Merrifield proceeded to ground into a double play, and only one man reached base in the last five innings. Jonathan Dziedzic took the loss, surrendering a run in the fourth after a double, wild pitch, and sac fly, then he gave up a double and a dinger in the seventh, knocking him out of the game. Brett Eibner continued his offensive resurgence, going 1-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Frank Schwindel’s second inning grand slam was more than enough offense in support of yet another solid start from Jake Junis. Following tonight’s 6.2 shutout innings, Junis has allowed just one run in his last 19.2 innings. The 23-year old righty also struck out six without walking a batter, and induced seven groundouts. On offense, the Naturals didn’t get much going for several innings after Schwindel’s blast, but Mauricio Ramos drove in a pair in the eighth with his third hit of the night, and Bubba Starling added an RBI double in the ninth – his league-leading 12th of the season. Benino Pruneda struck out four in 2.1 innings of relief work.

Wilmington Blue Rocks 7 Salem Red Sox 8 (10)

Despite a 15-hit explosion from the offense, the Rocks dropped another game, this one thanks to a walkoff single from Red Sox prospect Andrew Benintendi in the first extra frame. Every hitter reached base at least once, and six Rocks collected multiple hits on the evening. The Sox jumped all over Matt Tenuta, scoring two in the first, three in the third, and one more in the fourth inning. While the bullpen handed out eight (!) free passes over the following five innings, they only allowed two runs, which gave Wilmington their chance to come back in the ninth inning. Down two runs, and down to their final out, Austin Bailey and Alfredo Escalera hit back-to-back singles, before being driven in on a triple from Humberto Arteaga. They couldn’t capitalize on a two on, one out situation in the tenth, and Benintendi’s single sent everyone home.

Charleston RiverDogs 5 Lexington Legends 1

Nolan Watson struck out a career-high six batters in his four innings of work, but he also gave up two home runs in the first inning, and the Legends were unable to produce any kind of offense to pick up the former first-rounder. Watson’s ERA now stands at 10.52. An ERA starting with a one is good, but not if it’s followed by three more numbers. He did only issue one walk, and 41 of his 69 pitches went for strikes, so perhaps this can get him going. Offensively, the Legends collected just six hits, three of which left the bat of Amalani Fukofuka. The RiverDogs scored two more runs against Niklas Stephenson in the eighth, putting the game out of reach.

After losing his first game of the year against the Zephyrs while allowing no earned runs in five innings, lefty Jonathan Dziedzic must have thought he needed to do a tad better. He did just that Friday night tossing seven scoreless this time with 3 hits and nary a walk allowed on just 90 pitches. With the quality pitching, the Chasers did enough by manufacturing runs with outs in the 1st, 5th and 8th innings to take the 3-0 shutout win.

Starter Christian Binford got knocked around for a second time this season by the Frisco Rough Riders, allowing seven runs (6 ER) in just 4.2 innings while ballooning his ERA to 13.00. The lanky righty appeared to only trust his fastball and curve on the night and neither is a dominant enough weapon to keep hitters honest the second or third time through a lineup. While Binford was getting knocked around, the Naturals offense was missing early opportunities to score, going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. One bright spot was Raul Mondesi, who lined a double down the rightfield corner and hit a home run to the right-center gap, a line shot that didn’t have a ton of loft but showed his batspeed from that left side. In addition to the two hits, Mondesi also stole a bag, his fifth already in the young season. He is showing a much more aggressive approach on the bases with fully healthy legs.

The Blue Rocks showed their appreciation for playing away from Frawley field as Stephen F. Austin alums Ryan O’Hearn and Corey Toups both hit big flies on the night. The home runs, one by Toups and two for O’Hearn, one of the inside the park variety, came off Nationals 1st round pick Erick Fedde who was rated as the Nationals 6th best prospect by Baseball Prospectus. The beneficiary of the longball offense was lefty Matt Tenuta who worked five innings while allowing just one run to earn his first victory on the year.

The Legends built a small early lead that they took to the late innings Friday only to watch the bullpen let it slip away. The Low-A club used extra base hits in the 2nd through 5th innings to plate five runs and grab a 5-4 advantage that they would take until the 8th, only to watch reliever Kyle Kubat give it up and eventually lose it in the 10th. A solo home run for Chase Vallot, his second, got the scoring started while triples from Marten Gasparini, DJ Burt and a double from Ben Johnson helped tack on additional runs.
