Omaha Storm Chasers 4 Iowa Cubs 3 F/8

The Chasers scored a late run after their starter grinded through six innings, earning a win in the first game of the doubleheader. Catcher Tony Cruz doubled in Jorge Bonifacio to break a 3-3 tie and Kevin McCarthy worked around a single to close the game. Cruz drove in three of the four Chaser runs, combining with Hunter Dozier, who hit his 17th home run of the season, to pace the offense. Starter Alec Mills missed out on earning the win, but worked through six innings with seven hits and a walk allowed.

Hunter Dozier kept up his hot hitting with three hits, a run batted in and a pair of runs scored in game two as he and Balbino Fuenmayor helped pace the offense. Reliever Malcom Culver gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extras but the Chasers came through with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to earn the win, Dozier drove in one win with a single while the other scored on a wild pitch.

The Naturals couldn’t push a run across, going 0-4 with runners in scoring position while failing to collect an extra base hit during their seventh consecutive loss to Midland on Wednesday. Pitcher Ashton Goudeau gave up four runs on five hits and three walks, all during the four run third inning to drop his Double-A record to 2-7. Big time A’s prospect Franklin Barreto went three for three with a walk and two runs scored.

The Rocks knotted the game late only to watch the Nationals walk if off in the tenth. Shorstop Brian Bien collected four hits while Brandon Downes hit a solo home run as part of a 12 hit team effort that produced just three runs. The squad went just 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position while the Nationals scored four times on just four hits thanks in part to a pair of Rocks errors and four stolen bases. Wilmington starter Josh Staumont was solid, tossing seven innings of two hit ball with just one walk allowed while striking out seven. It was Max Schrock’s tenth inning solo home run off Rocks pitcher Derek Gordon that ended it.

The Raptors snapped the Idaho Falls three game winning streak by walking them off on Wednesday night. Ogden limited the league’s top ranked offense to just five hits and three runs while coming back from a 3-1 deficit late to send the game to extras. All three Idaho Falls runs came in the fourth inning when they piled up three of their five hits to push the runs across. A two run home run off reliever Jason Freeman spoiled a quality one run outing by Alex Luna over 6.2 innings to send the game to extra innings. In the tenth a pair of walks allowed by Enmanuel Camacho prior to a one out single walked it off for Ogden.

Jorge Rodriguez tossed up zeroes for the third time in his four starts for the Arizona club on the way to another win. The offense pounded out thirteen hits in backing the 20 year old righthander to build a 9-0 lead and the eventual win. Three 2015 Latin signees had two hits in the game with catcher Sebastian Rivera doubling and also driving in two runs.

Two Royals pitchers combined to strikeout eight while starter Randy Acevedo worked around five hits to complete his six innings before turning it over to Emmanuel Estevez. The 19 year old Estevez earned the win by striking out four over his three innings by allowing just a walk over that time.

The Redbirds attempted to work around their former prospect Tony Cruz for most of Friday night and it burned them in the end. Starter Alec Mills had to grind through 5.2 innings, giving up a pair of home runs in his time but avoiding a loss thanks to Travis Snider. A three run home run by Snider in the sixth tied the game to get Mills off the look for a loss. From there the two teams exchanged zeroes until the tenth when the Redbirds intentionally walked Cruz following a Hunter Dozier double to pitch to Snider with a lefty on lefty matchup. This moved worked for Memphis in the 8th when they used it but Snider would make them pay in extras with a drive to the warning track that eluded the two Memphis outfielders for a walkoff hit for an Omaha win.

The RockHounds took Ashton Goudeau deep three times to build a lead that the Naturals couldn’t overcome. It took six innings for NW Arkansas to get on the board, using a Corey Toups double as part of a single run that cut their deficit to 6-1. That lead would stand until the eighth when they would cut the deficit to two runs with an error that scored Carlos Garcia and a two run double via Ryan O’Hearn. Unfortunately NW Arkansas could get no closer dropping the first two games of the three game series.

An ugly game for the Blue Rocks pitching staff Friday, surrendering five home runs and eighteen runs in a route. Reliever Luis Rico was knocked around the worst, giving up three home runs and eight runs in just two innings in relief of starter Josh Staumont who lasted just one and one-third innings before leaving with an illness. Most of Wilmington’s five runs were provided by Brandon Downes who scored a run and drove in three more on a pair of hits including his nineteenth double of the season.

The Legends lost a low scoring affair to even their series at one apiece. After Rome worked around a runner to score after he got on via a wildpitch strikeout the Legends answered quickly with Anderson Miller’s first home run of the season. The game remained tied until the seventh inning when starter Gerson Garabito yielded a two run home run that gave Rome the lead. The Latin righthander had pitched solidly up until that point working around three walks and a pair of singles in the first six innings of the effort. Those two runs were enough to put the game away as the Legends struggled to make contact, striking out 14 times while putting together just three hits. The home run for Miller extended his on base streak to fifteen games, he’s carried a .524 on base percentage in that time.

The Chukars walked off for the second night in a row to beat the Rockies. Trailing 2-0 the Chukars got their offense going after Kansas native Riley Pint left the game after his two scoreless innings, scoring three runs in the third inning with Tanner Stanley tripling to drive in one run and scoring for another. The Rockies would tie the game in the fifth and regain the lead in the eighth with a run off Alex Luna. That lead would hold until the ninth when a pair of Chukars base runners were driven in by Nick Heath when he ripped an RBI triple down the right field line.

It was Ofreidy Gomez earning 11 groundouts on this night while allowing just a pair of singles in his six inning outing. A four run sixth helped the Royals towards six runs to take the lead and the eventual win. Reliever Walker Sheller earned his first pro save with a scoreless ninth inning.

A dominant wins on both sides of the diamond for the AZL Royals Friday night. Seven runs within the first three innings powered by a three run home run by Seuly Matias in the 2nd. Matias was part of a three run first also with one of two doubles in the inning.
