The Legends offense struggled in their two-game sweep at the hands of the Phillies Low-A club on Saturday night. With just eight combined hits in 18 innings of action the Legends normally potent offense managed just two runs in the two games with Nick Pratto connecting on his ninth home run in the first game and Cal Jones driving in the other run, both in the fourth inning of game one. With a lack of offense, Charlie Neuweiler took a no-decision despite setting a career high with nine strikeouts, allowing two runs in six innings with two runs allowed on four hits and a pair of walks. The Legends took a loss in the first game when their offense failed to score the free runner in the eighth and ninth innings, taking the loss in the ninth when Lakeland scored on a sac fly. During game two 1st round pick Jackson Kowar was more effective than he had been previously, working three and two-thirds innings without a run allowed. The right-hander worked primarily with his four-seam fastball that was registering 95-98 mph on the scoreboard (typically hot 1-2 mph) while mixing in approximately 10 other secondary offerings on his 67 pitches. The former Gators pitcher walked three hitters while striking out three against one hit allowed. Like the first game, this one went to extras where the Legends failed to score in the eighth and Lakewood walked it off with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Gm 2 Wilmington Blue Rocks 4 Frederick Keys 2

The Rocks Dan Tillo has struggled with his control recently, walking four or more five times since June 12th including six walks last start. With that trouble, Tillo quickened his pace and went more on the attack this time out instead of nibbling. With that, the lefty was able to toss six innings with just a run allowed on seven hits and a pair of walks. Despite Tillo’s work, Wilmington was tied through seven innings as the only run provided by the offense was via a D.J. Burt rbi single. The game went to extras where a double off Anthony Bender scored the free runner before the Rocks went scoreless to drop the game. Game two was a little different for Wilmington as the offense was a tad more lively with nine hits and four runs with four different Rocks driving in runs. Starter Nolan Watson gave his squad his fourth quality start in five tries with just an unearned run allowed in six innings. The right-hander gave up just a first-inning single before a pair of singles sandwiched around a wild pitch and a passed ball helped score an unearned run in the sixth for his only run allowed. Reliever Julio Pinto gave up a run in the ninth before getting the final out to secure the win. The Rocks have a three-game lead in the division at the end of play on Saturday.

The Naturals won a pitching duel on Saturday behind a resurgent Foster Griffin. After carrying a near eight-run earned run average during May and June Griffin has found himself his last four starts out including this one. Matching Springfield starter Evan Kruczynski with scoreless inning the lefty was doing what he did last year, mixing and matching while creating groundball outs. Striking out six hitters with 61 strikes on 93 pitches the lefty worked around seven hits and a pair of walks over seven shutout innings. Scoreless into the Naturals put the only run on the board with a two-out triple by Jecksson Flores prior to a rbi single by Samir Duenez. That proved to be the winning run with Griffin and reliever Pedro Fernandez shutting out the Cardinals offense.

The Chasers struggled to score runners in scoring position, going 1 for 7 on Saturday night in a narrow loss. The Angels Triple-A squad didn’t do much better (2 for 7) but got some help with a Sam Selman wild pitch scoring a run in the eighth which ended up making the difference in the game. After pulling within a run and placing the tying run at third base with one out, Donnie Dewees grounded into a double play to end the rally and ultimately hand the Chasers a defeat after a 1-2-3 ninth.

Despite being limited to just four hits the Chukars were able to give J.C. Cloney his ninth win of the season thanks to a couple of errors by Grand Junction. The Pioneer League’s best pitcher lowered his ERA to 1.93 with six scoreless innings while scattering five hits and a walk over six innings. Idaho Falls scored a run in the first after a single by Tyler James, an errant pickoff moved him to second and a pair of groundouts brought him around. That score remained until the sixth when an error and a pair of wild pitches helped tack on an additional two runs following a triple and a rbi single by Kyle Kasser. Infielder Nathan Eaton walked, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw by the pitcher before scoring on a wild pitch. Reliever Stephen Greenlees struggled in the in the seventh, allowing three runs on three hits and walk before Jose Ramirez bailed him out and tossed the final two innings scoreless to secure the save.

Game 2 Asheville Tourists 2 Lexington Legends 1

In game one the Legends shortstop Cristian Perez singled in a pair in the fourth inning as part of a three-run frame to take a 3-0 advantage. The nineteenth home run of the season by Seuly Matias came two innings later to go up 4-0 before a couple unearned runs came across on Andres Sotillet cut the lead in half. Closer Tyler Zuber gave up a run but held on for the win to snap Lexington’s three-game losing streak.

In the second game the player the Royals acquired after the Braves international cheating scandal, Yefri Del Rosario took the mound for his first time with the organization. The hard-throwing Latin product was on his game early, throwing four scoreless with six strikeouts in that time before yielding back to back solo home runs in the fifth to fall behind 2-0. The Legends offense was put on ice until the seventh and last inning when Perez doubled and scored before Matias struckout to end the game.

The Keys stopped Wilmington’s six-game win streak after limiting them to a 1 for 8 effort with runners in scoring position on Friday night. The Orioles High-A squad got after starter Ofreidy Gomez for three runs in the first three innings, collecting six hits off Gomez in that time. The right-hander was able to navigate his final four innings without allowing another run to give Wilmington a quality start. Wilmington’s only two runs came in the seventh on back to back doubles by Xavier Fernandez and Chase Vallot but the squad could muster nothing else in the loss.

The Naturals Scott Blewett gave up plenty of hits, ten, in his time on the hill but the offense backed him up to take a win against Springfield. The big right-hander fell behind in the first inning when he allowed four hits to the first five batters, allowing two Cardinals runs in the frame. The lead stood at 3-1 into the sixth when the NW Arkansas offense got a jolt from Jecksson Flores rbi double. A Nick Dini single tied it up and John Brontsema’s second home run of the season quickly gave the Naturals their first lead of the game. Infield Nicky Lopez drove in another run in the inning after Donnie Dewees had triple to push the lead to 6-3. After Blewett tossed a scoreless seventh prior to his battery partner, Luis Villegas homering to add to the lead before Blewett gave up a home run after starting the eighth with a pair of outs. Reliever Sam Selman failed to get an out against the three batters he faced which cut the advantage to two but closer Jake Newberry got out of the jam and finished the game without allowing the Cardinals to tie it despite giving up a run on three hits in the ninth.

Later in the game infielder, Humberto Arteaga was doing the damage with a rbi double in the seventh and a three-run home run in the eighth inning as the Chasers put together four different multiple run innings in the sixteen run explosion.
The Rocks Khalil Lee scored a pair of runs early and starter Jace Vines made it stand up in the first game of the doubleheader, throwing a complete game. The former Texas A&M pitcher negotiated five hits and three walks in his seven innings thanks to his usual high number of groundouts, collecting nine to earn his second win.

In game two, Anthony Bender struggled with his control while failing to limit contact as well. Despite the right-hander regularly working in the mid to upper 90s, he’s failing to capitalize on that velocity, striking out just 5.3 hitters per nine. Additionally, Bender is walking 6.8 per nine while giving up more than a hit per inning which all speaks to a firm fastball. Wednesday, it was more of the same with Bender walking four and allowing seven hits which led to seven runs. The Rocks got a run on a single, a walk and a groundout in the second, but didn’t get another hit until the sixth inning in the loss.

Three consecutive singles jump-started the fourth inning for the Naturals. The third single came off the bat of Jecksson Flores, scoring Nicky Lopez. A throwing error by the pitcher on an Anderson Miller bunt scored another and pushed Miller and Flores into scoring position. A passed ball and another single, this one by Luis Villegas, scored both runners to flip a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead. Starter Zach Lovvorn gave up two runs the next inning but was able to get through six innings for a quality start before handing things off to the bullpen. A Villegas sac fly scored Miller in the sixth as insurance before the rain came in the eighth, ending the game early, in a Naturals win.

Burlington Royals 4 Princeton Rays 3
Burlington advances 2 to 1

A dramatic late comeback advanced the Royals in the deciding Game Three of their division semifinal. With the league’s top pitcher on the mound for the Royals, it was surprising that they found themselves behind 2-0 after a two-run home run by Deion Tansel of the Rays. The Royals’ starter would settle down, allowing his team to tie the game in the fourth on RBI singles by Vance Vizcaino and Nicky Lopez. The game would stay knotted at 2-2 until the seventh when reliever Alex Massey gave up three consecutive singles to open the inning, pushing Princeton ahead 3-2. The Tulane righty stabilized things to get the final three hitters in the inning and keep the deficit at just one run. Another Rays threat in the eighth put the game on the brink versus reliever Walker Sheller with a runner on second with just one out, but once again the Royals would escape any damage with a strikeout and a groundout.

That would allow Burlington to tie the game in their half of the inning without a hit, getting a hit by pitch of Kort Peterson, an error on a double play throw that pushed Chris DeVito to second base after Peterson had been forced out and another error that allowed pinch runner Tyler Straub to head to third base with just one out. That error was cashed in when Vizcaino brought home Straub to tie the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly to left field. That tie was nearly unknotted after a Nathan Esposito single to center, but Rays centerfielder Emilio Gustave gunned down Royals Emmanuel Rivera at the plate to send the game to the ninth inning still tied. After a perfect top half of the ninth by Sheller the Royals would quickly walk things off in their half, getting a double by Jonathan McCray to open the inning and setup a run-scoring single by Nicky Lopez to bring him home after stumbling around third and then daring to come home as Lopez got caught up between first and second. The win sends Burlington to the championship series for the first time since 2012, a team that featured Bubba Starling and Terrance Gore.
The Naturals were motivated and ready from the jump in this one, getting out to an early lead and cruising from there. Leadoff batter Corey Toups started the Naturals first with a hit by pitch and moved to second on an Alfredo Escalera bunt sacrifice as NW Arkansas played for an early score. After a single by Mauricio Ramos moved Toups to third base, first baseman Ryan O’Hearn singled Toups in to give NW Arkansas a 1-0 lead. The Naturals quickly upped that lead when Frank Schwindel doubled in Ramos and O’Hearn to push the lead to 3-0 before Schwindel got tossed out at third. The second inning started with a Humberto Arteaga triple and a Logan Moon sac fly to push the lead to four. With Josh Staumont tossing beebees, the offense put up four more runs on the board in the fourth to put the game well in hand. The big knocks in that inning came from Ramos and O’Hearn, with each plating a pair of runs with doubles. That was more than enough scoring as Staumont controlled the strikezone throughout, walking just two while allowing four hits and matching his career high with 12 whiffs. The righty turned things over to the pen who finished off the final three innings scoreless to earn a bid to the Texas League playoffs. The Naturals will start their best of 5 series with Springfield on Wednesday, with the first two games on the road before playing the possible final three at home.

The Chasers lost an offensive duel to finish their season 58-82. The two teams combined for 31 hits, including 11 that went for extra bases, but it was Oklahoma City’s four home runs that was the difference. The Dodgers uber prospect, Cody Bellinger, hit his third home run in two games while driving in a pair, but it was Brandon Hicks hitting two home runs and driving in four that did the most damage. The Dodgers rocked Jake Junis, scoring seven runs in five innings as part of their 10 run onslaught while the Chasers scored in six of nine inning with a pair of the ninth to come up two runs short in the loss. The record is the worst for the Omaha based franchise since going 53-91 during the 2006 season.

Lefty Matt Tenuta was touched up for six runs in six innings, giving up a pair of home runs in the season-ending loss for Wilmington. The Rocks starter surrendered a three-run dinger in the second inning to put Wilmington behind 3-1 before allowing a pair of doubles in the third to plate another. The final blow came immediately after the doubles, a two-run home run to push the Frederick lead to 6-1. The lefty would find a groove too late, retiring the next eight hitters in a row, before finishing the sixth inning scoreless and turning things to the bullpen. His battery mate, Luis Villegas, would homer twice, once in the second and another in the eighth, but it would be too little for the Rocks as they finished their season 54-84. The record for the Rocks is the worst they have had since regaining a franchise in 1993.

The Legends couldn’t cash in runs during their final game of the season, falling by a run to finish 52-87. The Legends scored just two runs, missing a couple opportunities to push home D.J. Burt after he had stolen second base in the first and eighth innings. Those missed chances cost them in the loss after starter Gerson Garabito gave up three runs (2 ER) in six innings on four hits and a walk, one of those four being a two-run home run in the third inning. The loss pushed Garabito’s record to 2-11 on the season with a final ERA of 4.80 this season. The Lexington franchise hasn’t had a winning season since 2010.

The league’s worst bullpen continued their status quo on Sunday night, blowing leads in the eighth, ninth, and finally, the tenth inning. The Chukars offense attacked throughout the game, building a 5-1 lead with a four-run fifth frame. After adding to their lead at 6-3 in the top of the seventh, the bullpen started their woeful ways. Reliever Cole Way giving up a pair of runs in the seventh to trim the margin to 6-5. The tall lefty one inning later would load the bases before turning things to Richard Lovelady who would promptly walk in the tying run before ending the inning. This would turn into a pattern as Idaho Falls would build leads in the ninth and tenth with Lovelady losing the lead in the ninth and reliever Nic Andros blowing it in the tenth. The bullpen added to their league-leading 16th blown save coming into the game for the Chukars loss and the end of their season, having been eliminated from the playoff race officially with the loss.

The two PCL clubs scored a pair of runs each in the first three innings, only to go silent before a big tenth inning home run. Omaha’s Whit Merrifield doubled and scored on a Jorge Bonifacio single in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. After Memphis tied the game in the second Omaha took the lead back in the third following a throwing error on a Bonifacio ball that allowed Rey Fuentes to come around. That lead was short lived after a Randal Grichuk two out solo home run in the bottom half of the frame. From there the pitching staffs grabbed hold of the game, tossing up zeroes until they reached extra frames. In extras the Redbirds were unable to turn a possible inning ending double play on a Fuentes’ ball hit to the shortstop, allowing Bonifacio to come to the plate after a Hunter Dozier walk. The Omaha outfielder made Memphis and pitcher Juan Gonzalez pay, hitting a hanging breaking ball out to left for a grand slam. The win went to Edward Mujica after working around a two run home run in the bottom of the tenth.

The Naturals Jake Junis set a season high in strikeouts during the finale with Arkansas but it wasn’t enough after the Travelers catcher got to him a couple of times. A hanging curveball was knocked down the line and kept fair off Jose Briceno’s bat in that third while back to back doubles in the fifth by Caleb Adams and Briceno accounted for both runs in the fifth after Zach Welz knocked in Briceno with a single. It was a season high nine strikeouts by Junis as he was able to mix up his slider, curve and fastball with regularity, giving up five hits and a walk. The Naturals offense helped saddle Junis with the loss after their bats went silent following a run in the first inning.

The Rocks exploded Tuesday to salvage the final game of their three game series with Salem. A pair of hitters did much of the heavy lifting as Brandon Downes and Luis Villegas combined for three home runs and eight of the thirteen runs driven in on the night. Those runs propped up lefty Matt Tenuta, who worked through six innings scoreless while scattering six hits and striking out three hitters to earn his fifth win of the season. It was Downes homering in the third as part of Wilmington’s four run frame and Villegas with a three run shot in the sixth as part of a five run inning. Six different hitters had two or more hits in the win.

The Legends couldn’t complete a sweep of Rome due to a former 1st round picks excellence against them Wednesday afternoon. Lefty Kolby Allard, the 2015 14th overall pick, worked Lexington over for six and one-third innings, striking out 11 batters against just three hits and a walk. The only run allowed came from back to back infield hits to start the seventh inning with DJ Burt coming around for the lone Lexington run. With the offense being dominated the loss was pinned on rehabbing Glenn Sparkman who looked better in his latest outing but still allowed eight hits over six innings, giving up three runs in that time.

Starter Anthony Bender gave the Royals five scoreless innings, leaving with the lead against the Whit Sox. The righty allowed just two singles, only one of which left the infield while walking one and striking out three on the night. The one walk doubled his season total in 19.2 innings of work in Arizona for the hard throwing righty. Fellow ’16 draftee accounted for three of the four AZL runs, doubling and scoring in the fourth before driving in a run on a single in the eighth and coming around as part of a two run single by Robby Rinn. Royals righty Julio Pinto worked 3.2 innings perfect before yielding a hit and a pair of walks and giving way to Matt Wynne who got the final out of the night.
