A three run third inning that featured five singles gave Omaha an early 3-1 lead. That lead stood up until the seventh inning when the Sounds got a pair of runs off reliever Seth Maness thanks to a pair of walks he inherited from Mark Peterson. From that point, the game stayed tied into extra innings as Maness worked four innings, taking the game into the 11th inning. Prior to him leaving, the Chasers had given him the lead when Hunter Dozier blooped a single over the second baseman’s head with two outs to score Ramon Torres.

Lefty Sam Selman would shut the door in the bottom half of the inning on just 11 pitches, striking out the side to secure the save.

The Drillers followed their name and drilled the Naturals in this one. Starter Corey Ray took the brunt of it, allowing seven runs in just one and one-third innings, giving up seven hits and two walks in that time. Things didn’t get much better for the relief staff as three different pitchers allowed nine more runs on 13 hits as Tulsa compiled 20 hits during the game. The Naturals offense didn’t do much on their end either collecting just three hits while getting just one runner into scoring position the entire night.

Starters Jared Ruxer and Rangers Wes Benjamin matched each other zero for zero until Down East got to Ruxer for a pair of runs in the sixth inning to take a lead and pick up an eventual win. The Rocks had runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings but failed to score in both innings to take the loss.

Game 2
Down East Wood Ducks 4 Wilmington Blue Rocks 2

In the second game, the Rocks got on the board with an RBI single by Chris DeVito in the first inning and an RBI double by Colton Frabasilio in the second. Unfortunately, their bats would go silent from there and a four run Wood Ducks fourth inning would do them in. Starter Cristian Castillo took the loss to fall to 7-12 on the season as the lefty continues to struggle in the season’s second half.

Augusta GreenJackets 4 Lexington Legends 0

The Legends went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and Augusta didn’t fare much better going 0 for 4, but the Giants affiliate hit for power to take down the Legends in game one. Starter Gerson Garabito gave up three solo home runs and the GreenJackets scored another run with help from a Lexington error in the shutout win.

Game 2

The second game was similar to the first with the Legends going 0 for with runners in scoring position and the GreenJackets connecting on a pair of long balls to gain the victory. All three runs for Lexington came via outs while Augusta hit a pair of home runs off reliever Collin Snyder to gain control of the game in the middle innings.

Idaho Falls Chukars 6 Grand Junction Rockies 4

Hard throwing Janser Lara gave Idaho Falls a quality start, tossing six innings while allowing five hits and three runs. The Dominican righty struck out seven hitters in those six innings while walking just one hitter. The Chukars offense backed Lara with six runs, scoring two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Included in that outburst was a home run from ’17 draftee Brewer Hicklen that traveled a reported 455 feet.

Reliever Andrew Beckwith tossed the final three innings while allowing just one run to earn the save.

The Royals 11th round pick, Sal Biasi, tossed matched Bristol’s starter with five shutout innings before Cal Jones unloaded on his sixth home run of the season to break the scoreless tie. An RBI triple in that same inning by Sebastian Rivero tacked on another run and the Royals scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth after the Pirates had trimmed the lead to one in the seventh.

AZL Royals 8 AZL Giants 2

Starter Randy Acevedo gave the Arizona squad a complete game, and the bats gave him a win in game one of the doubleheader.
Omaha starter Luke Farrell was roughed up in his return to Triple-A. The Baby Cakes tagged Farrell for five runs on seven hits, three of which went for extra bases including a home run from Moises Sierra. The Chasers, who have been lacking on pitching with the constant back and forth of many on their staff, got just 61 pitches and three innings from the starter.

The offense didn’t threaten much, getting just six hits from three different players while going 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

Reliever Sam Selman gave up an unearned run but did strike out three hitters in his return to the Chasers.

The Royals Futures Game representative, Foster Griffin, had his most challenging Double-A start to date, lasting just into the fifth inning Thursday night. Touched up for a pair of home runs and six other hits, Griffin gave up three runs before leaving in the fifth with a pair of runners on.

Luckily for Griffin, he turned things over to Richard Lovelady, the Royals hottest relief prospect. All Lovelady did when he entered was strike out the first two hitters he faced and earn a flyout to get the Naturals out of the jam. The Corpus defense lent them a hand in the next inning, making a pair of errors to help NW Arkansas to two runs to take the lead. After Lovelady spun two more perfect innings, the Naturals would take a commanding lead in the eighth, scoring four runs on four singles and another Hooks error.

Right-hander Andres Machado couldn’t match the 14 Ks he earned last time out, but instead pitched a season-high 7.1 innings to put his squad in position for a win.

The Rocks offense positioned Machado in a great spot in the first inning with home runs by Nick Heath, his first of the year, and Chris DeVito to put Wilmington up 3-0. The Wilmington starter gave up a solo home run of his own in the first before running off nothing but zeros for the rest of the game.

The Rocks two speedsters in Heath and D.J. Burt would provide two of their final three runs with Heath driving in one on a sac fly and Burt walking, stealing second and advancing to third on an errant throw before scoring on a wild pitch.

The Legends finished off the suspended game that they led 5-2 on Wednesday. Each team scored three more runs in finishing the nine-inning game as Lexington kept the Pirates Low-A team at bay.

Pitcher Jace Vines took over the game, finishing the final six innings with three unearned runs allowed while striking out seven hitters against no walks. Offensively, it was a team effort, with seven Lexington hitters driving in a run and the nine hitters that took at-bats reaching base at least once. Second baseman Gabe Cancel pushed his hitting streak to six games, in that time he’s 13 for 26 with a .962 slugging average in that time.

The Chukars starting pitcher Jeremy Gwinn gave up three home runs as part of his 11 runs allowed in four innings to put his team down big. The Chukars offense scored their run in the fifth inning in this lopsided affair.

The Royals trailed just 2-1 into the sixth in the final game of their series with the Blue Jays rookie squad when things got away from them. A pair of errors to start the inning opened the door to a huge frame for the Jays as they battered reliever Collin Snyder for six hits following the errors, including three doubles that led to seven runs.

Those runs were plenty to defeat the Royals whose only run came on an Oliver Nunez solo home run.

Boxscore Link

The Royals jumped on the Rangers for three runs in the first and then tried to make that stand up the rest of the way. Catcher MJ Melendez hit his second home run as a pro and Esteury Ruiz blasted his third of the young season to give the Royals that 3-0 lead. The offense would go on ice after a second-inning single by Angel Medina, going hitless until the ninth.

The three runs held up through eight innings, with Joey Markus going four while allowing two runs on three hits and three walks thanks to five strikeouts. Newly signed Mitchell Schulewitz worked two scoreless innings and it appeared the Royals were going to make the three runs stand up until reliever Stephen Greenlees struggled in the ninth, giving up three runs to give the Rangers a 5-3 lead.

The Royals would get one back in the ninth on a fielding error on a ball off the bat of Esteury Ruiz and a passed ball that brought him in, but could get no closer in the loss.

The Royals couldn’t get much accomplished against the Red Sox starter early and the offense that did come late wasn’t enough as the bullpen gave up a couple runs.

The Chasers slugged their way to a win while using five different pitchers.

With 16 hits, the Omaha lineup crossed the plate 11 times on the night with the 2-3-4 hitters of Raul Mondesi, Jorge Soler and Ryan O’Hearn accounting for nine hits and seven RBI. The Chasers connected on six extra base hits including catcher Cam Gallagher’s fourth home run of the year.

The five Chasers pitchers struck out 10 Memphis hitters while spreading 11 hits to limit the Redbirds to three runs.

Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Naturals offense came through with four runs over the final three innings to take down the Dodgers Double-A franchise for the seventh consecutive time.

Newly acquired Zach Walters singled in Corey Toups in the seventh and Alfredo Escalera in the ninth as part of the four-run comeback.

Reliever Sam Selman continued his outstanding run in ’17, tossing two scoreless with four strikeouts. Those two innings gave Selman a stretch of 24.1 innings with just two earned runs allowed in his past 13 appearances with 32 strikeouts. Overall, Selman has pushed his strikeout total to 53 in 34.1 innings this season.

After an outstanding start by Scott Blewett, the Rocks usually dependable bullpen gave things up in a big fashion.

The Royals 2014 2nd round pick tied his career high for strikeouts in his last start before the break, so he decided to set a new career high in his first start back. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while putting away 12 Salem hitters via strikeout. Earning 20 swinging strikes in the process, the only trouble Blewett would run into was in the third frame when he gave up a pair of runs on all four hits that he allowed in the game.

The Wilmington offense scored six runs betweens the sixth and seventh innings with nine hits, including Chase Vallot’s eighth home run of the season. Unfortunately, the 7-2 lead wasn’t enough as relievers Jacob Bodner and Walker Sheller couldn’t get out of the eighth inning, allowing Salem to score nine runs on seven hits, an error and a pair of walks to take the loss.

The Legends pitchers got knocked around in the first game of their road series in West Virginia.

Starter Arnaldo Hernandez and reliever Anthony Bender gave up four home runs in six innings with Bender getting touched up for five runs in just one inning of work. The nine runs allowed by the two Legends pitchers were too much for the offense to overcome.

The Legends second baseman, Gabriel Cancel, had a big day at the dish with three hits including a pair of doubles and his sixth home run of the season.

Boxscore Link

The Chukars used a nine-run outburst from the sixth through the eighth innings to build a big enough lead to hang onto a win in Grand Junction.

The big six-run eighth frame featured six singles, an error, and a bases-loaded walk. Catcher Darrell Miller had two hits in the inning as part of the 5-5 night that included two runs scored and two RBI to help pace Idaho Falls during their 15 hit affair.

The Rockies rookie league squad mounted a comeback in the ninth, scoring three runs before the Chukars walked away with a series win.

The Royals first game didn’t go quite as well as they had hoped with a reliever struggling to keep the opponent off the board.

Starter Nathan Webb, the Lee’s Summit North product, allowed three runs (2 ER) in four innings on five hits and a pair of walks. While that line is less than ideal, it was reliever Felix Familia’s five runs in 1.2 innings that did in the Burlington squad.

Those five runs put the Royals down 8-2 after just six innings with the only runs coming via a Michael Gigliotti two-run home run. The deficit would increase to eight with a pair of unearned runs off Tyler Fallwell which would prove plenty of insurance for Kingsport. Royals’ first baseman Dennicher Carrasco hit a two-run home run in the ninth, and Gigliotti would add his second longball to narrow the gap before the Mets would close out the game.

Boxscore Link

DSL Marlins 4, DSL Royals 3

Starter Delvin Capellan increased his earned run scoreless streak to 20 innings with another five innings on Thursday. The 18-year-old right-hander allowed just two hits while on the hill, leaving a scoreless game. Unfortunately, reliever Austin Morales didn’t fair quite as well, allowing three runs while retiring just one hitter.

The two teams would exchange runs before the Royals would get a pair in the ninth to fall a run short.

The Chasers offense finally got some things going on Sunday while getting a solid spot start from Christian Binford to even the series in Salt Lake at a game apiece.

Four different Chaser hitters had two hits in the game, with the team sandwiching solo runs in the third and fifth innings around a three-run fourth frame.

In that inning, Omaha received the timely hit they have been missing, getting a two-run single by Dean Anna after a sac bunt by Bubba Starling pushed the runners into scoring position. Catcher Parker Morin, playing in front of a large group of family members, would drive in Anna a couple hitters later with a two-out RBI double

The Naturals ran their scoreless streak versus the Travelers to over 31.2 innings with a second straight shutout versus them on Sunday.

Starter Miguel Almonte had to leave with an injury in the second, but that didn’t stop the relievers from taking over and continuing to pile up zeros. Lefty Sam Selman and Reid Redman did the majority of the work, combining to toss 6.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and a walk allowed.

The Naturals scored runs in the first and third on groundouts before a Zane Evans single capped the scoring in the fourth. It appeared Almonte’s injury was some sort of injury to his hand but it wasn’t announced following the game.

Boxscore Link

The Rocks offense came up big towards the end of their finale versus Down East.

With the team trailing 4-3 entering the eighth inning, Wilmington tagged the Rangers affiliate for seven runs in the final two frames to take home a series win.

It was Anderson Miller with a solo blast in the eighth that tied things up. One inning later, Wilmington applied pressure with a pair of walks to start the frame before D.J. Burt’s double gave them a lead. After a Miller single tacked on an extra run, it was Chase Vallot’s grand slam that pushed the lead to six and made a winner out of Wilmington.

The Legends struggled to push runners home to drop the third game in their foursome with West Virginia.

The visiting Legends went just 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position, while starter Nolan Watson dropped to 1-5 on the season after allowing four of his six runs in the sixth frame.

Catcher Meibrys Viloria continued his decent run of starts with a 3 for 4 day that included a double.
