The Chasers offense got after Kent Emanuel early and often in their win Tuesday afternoon. A Billy Burns triple to lead off the game got the festivities started and Dean Anna’s RBI single quickly made the game 1-0. After a pair of the Chasers loaded the bases with a Frank Schwindel single and Logan Moon walk, the bases were unloaded quickly when Corey Toups tattooed a ball 400 feet to left, putting Omaha up 5-0.

Those runs would prove to be plenty for Omaha starter Jake Junis. The righty breezed through six innings on 78 pitches, allowing just a solo home run to Tony Kemp. Home runs by Frank Schwindel and Logan Moon in the second pushed the score to 8-0 before Cheslor Cuthbert’s long ball in the sixth capped the scoring at 9-1.

The Naturals earned Foster Griffin his eighth Double-A win and 12th win overall on the year thanks to an eight-run sixth inning. With the game tied at one, the Mariners farm club piled up four singles off of Griffin in the fifth to plate three runs and take a 4-1 lead. Fortunately for the Naturals, a pair of errors helped them keep the singles train moving as they connected on seven hits in the sixth, six of which that were singles to plate the eight runs in the inning.

The Travelers would pull within a run after four runs off reliever Tim Hill in the eighth, but the Naturals would close the door in the ninth to earn the win.

The Astros scored four runs in the fifth inning off Cristian Castillo to open up a 2-1 game. A bases-loaded double by Jake Rogers plated a pair of runs and a run scoring sac fly and RBI single brought in the other two to push Wilmington down 6-1. The Rocks would threaten in the fifth inning with a double, but would fail to score. The bats then went silent with the final 13 Rocks failing to reach base.

The Legends got another quality start from Anthony Bender in earning another win over West Virgina. The pitcher the Royals drafted last year in the 20th round attacked the strike zone with 72 strikes on his 99 pitches, striking out seven while allowing five hits. All the damage the Power did versus Bender came in the second inning when they piled up three hits to plate both runs.

While the Power wasn’t hitting the ball over the wall, the Legends were, getting a home run in the first by Yeison Melo to take a 2-0 lead and another two-run shot by Meibrys Viloria in the fourth inning to retake the lead. That would account for all the scoring in the game with Justin Camp shutting the door over the final three innings.

The Burlington squad broke open a scoreless game in the seventh inning, getting a two-run home run by Benji Cash to break the tie and then eventually piled on the offense. A wild pitch scored another in the seventh inning before a two-run single by Jesus Atencio and two-run double by Michael Gigliotti plated four in the eighth to push the game well out of reach. Reliever Connor Mayes earned the win by tossing the final three innings scoreless after starter Nathan Webb had given the team six shutout innings.

The Royals scored four runs in the tenth inning to take command and eventually defeat the Braves on Tuesday. Entering the inning with just three hits, the team doubled their total and took two walks to plate those runs with Felix Familia providing the big blow with a two-out two-run double.

The Chasers struggles against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox continued on Monday.

The Chasers had 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but lost them and had to tie the game in the ninth to send the game to extras. After Ryan O’Hearn’s sacrifice fly sent the game to extra innings, the two teams exchanged zeros until he 12th. In that inning, Colorado Springs scored five runs off reliever Brian Flynn to put the game out of reach and defeat Omaha for the twelfth time in fourteen tries.

For the second start in a row, Foster Griffin was able to go just five innings but this time the lefty took the loss after the Naturals offense couldn’t back him up.

Giving up eight hits and three walks in the five innings Griffin gave up three runs while striking out just two hitters. In addition to Griffin, reliever Richard Lovelady gave up his first earned run in more than 30 innings, allowing a run on three hits allowed in the sixth inning. The Naturals offense compiled just six hits and one run in the loss.

The Royals had a chance to give the Pulaski Yankees their first series defeat on Monday and despite a 5-0 deficit, they did just that with a big offensive output.

Trailing 5-0 Royals prospect Seuly Matias connected on a double with the bases loaded and came around on an error to quickly bring Burlington within a run. The two teams would exchange runs until the Royals took over the game late. A three run seventh gave the Royals their first lead with Matias chipping in a run scoring single and first baseman Dennicher Carrasco connecting on a two run base hit. The Royals would tack on single runs in the eighth and ninth innings while their relief corps of Collin Snyder and Jordan Floyd would shutout the first place Yankees for the final four innings.

Fireworks Friday around most minor league parks occurred on the field in Greenville by the Lexington bats during the game.

The club knocked out 20 hits and 17 runs in a rout that included 12 runs between the third and fourth innings. The Legends popped six hits, had a hit by a pitch and a walk in the third inning with four of those hits going for extra bases to put eight runs on the board.

The team kept pushing runs across in the next three innings with eight more runs as they continued to pressure the Greenville pitching to build a huge 17-5 lead on the way to an easy win.

The AZL squad took care of business with 17 hits and 20 runs in a whitewash of the D-Backs squad.

The 4 through 6 hitters in the lineup did the majority of the damage, connecting on eight hits with Esteury Ruiz and Brewer Hicklen each hitting a home run while combining to drive in 11 of the team’s 20 runs.

The Royals 2016 draftee Malcolm Van Buren pitched a perfect first inning in his return from Tommy John to combine with five of the other six pitchers to toss scoreless innings in the win.

The two teams were held scoreless in extra innings on Friday.

The A’s score in the tenth with a run after pushing their extra inning runner across. The Royals would answer back getting a wild pitch to push their runner to third and tying the game on a ground out.

With the game tied at 1-1 and two outs, the Royals slugger Ismaldo Rodriguez unloaded on his fourth home run of the season to walk it off for the DSL Royals.

Julio Pinto’s struggles continued with 11 runs allowed (8 ER) in just two innings for the right-handed pitcher. Those runs put the squad in a huge hole that they were unable to dig out of.

The Chukars hit a pair of home runs but went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position to drop the game.

The Royals got beat by the Braves again despite their leadoff man doing everything he could.

The Braves got after Ismael Maldonado for five runs (4 ER) in just four and one-third innings, giving up five hits and three walks against just one K. Those five runs put the Royals behind 5-0.

Despite Michael Gigliotti reaching base all four times, he came up the rest of the lineup wasn’t doing much heavy lifting with just four hits. The centerfielder did double in a pair of runs in the seventh and scored on a sac fly by Jeison Guzman but the Royals couldn’t get anything else in the loss.

Boxscore Link

The Rocks starter got off to a slow start in a low scoring loss.

Righty A.J. Puckett gave up 10 hits in six innings, allowing three runs with single tallies in each of the first three innings. The Pepperdine product struck out six hitters while allowing just one walk and hitting the zone with 70 pitches out of 99 thrown.

Those three runs were plenty with Wilmington going scoreless til the ninth when Wander Franco scored after a one-out double.

The Naturals connected on 15 hits and walked the game off with another win over the Astros Double=A squad.

After a pair of runs given up in the first inning, NW Arkansas connected on six singles around a walk to plate four runs and grab the lead back. The Astros would look to put the stranglehold on the game, scoring five runs to take a 7-4 lead into the sixth frame.

Those runs wouldn’t be enough with NW Arkansas scoring three in the sixth with a rbi double by Samir Duenez and a two-run double by Donnie Dewees. The Naturals would threaten in the eighth but come up short before Dewees would triple in the ninth and score on Nick Dini’s sac fly to walk off.

The win went to Richard Lovelady after tossing two innings in his Double-A debut while hitting 100 mph on the stadium radar gun.

The rain delayed the Chasers game for a couple hours but couldn’t delay another loss to Colorado Springs for Omaha.

The Sky Sox score five runs in the first three innings to put Omaha down early. From there the bullpen settled things down with Brian Flynn and Kyle Zimmer tossing four scoreless innings.

The Chasers offense would score a pair of runs but come up short with just five hits on the night.

The Sky Sox have the Chasers number so far this season, defeating them on Wednesday for the seventh time in eight games.

Struggling starter Josh Staumont had his best start in some time, working 5.2 innings and allowing two runs (1 ER). The erratic pitcher walked four and uncorked a wild pitch to push a runner into scoring position for the earned run allowed.

Other than Dean Anna’s three hits, the Chasers offense struggled in the good run environment, scoring just one run and recording six hits total in the game. Reliever Eric Stout gave up two runs after walking three and allowing a pair of hits.

Boxscore Link

After a pair of promotions, the Wilmington bullpen is slightly weaker which may have played a hand in their loss Wednesday night.

Reliever Luis Rico struggled, giving up six runs in his 2.2 innings pushing the Rocks behind each time they pulled even or close.

New leadoff man D.J. Burt had a pair of hits, a walk, stole his 22nd base of the season, and scored a run.

The Legends came up on the downside of an evenly played game Wednesday afternoon.

Each team had 11 hits and a pair of errors, with the Legends connecting on the game’s only home run but coming up one hit shy to the Mets Low-A club with runners in scoring position. The Legends trailed 5-4 after a two-run single in the seventh inning but failed to get hits in both the seventh and eighth frame with the tying run in scoring position.

Lexington’s Marten Gasparini continues to turn around his season with three more hits, pushing his overall average to .242 after his .191 April.

Boxscore Link

The Chukars evened the series up with Grand Junction in a rather sloppy game.

Each team committed three errors which led to multiple unearned runs for both squads. The Chukars trailing 4-3 got three unearned runs in the seventh to take the lead, and Christopher Marte tossed 5.1 innings scoreless to earn the win.

The Royals came up short in their first game against the Braves.

Starter Nathan Webb gave the team a quality start with six innings of three-run ball, but took the loss with too little offensive contribution in support. The right-handed starter tossed three innings scoreless before getting touched for a two-run home run in the fourth.

The Royals came up a run short going 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position to drop to 2-4 on the young season.

The Royals got out to an early lead and hung on late.

The Surprise squad quickly put three runs on the board in the first inning, getting an RBI triple from Reymond Lopez, a sac fly by Nick Pratto and an RBI single from Cristian Perez.

Their starter, Josh Mitchell, worked three scoreless innings, striking out three in his second appearance. The offense tacked on four single tallies the rest of the way which helped work around the five unearned runs their defense gifted the Padres.

Catcher MJ Melendez had a big day, going 2 for 5 with his first home run while also tossing out two potential base stealers from behind the dish.

Boxscore Link

DSL Royals 5, DSL Braves 1

The DSL Royals ace, Delvin Capellan, gave up his first earned run of the season in 20 innings, but it didn’t prevent a Royals win.

The two teams exchanged home runs in the first inning, but the Royals homer came with two aboard off the bat of Ismaldo Rodriguez to give them a 3-1 lead. From there, Capellan tossed four scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season, striking out four in the start before the bullpen shut the door.

For the second night in a row, the Chasers offense thumped their way to a win over the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate.

All nine Omaha hitters reached base in the game and middle of the order answered the bell with seven RBI in the game. The hitter in that group with the biggest night was designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn who slugged a three run home run in the first as part of a five run frame before doubling in a pair in the fourth inning.

The beneficiary of the 10 runs was pitcher Yender Caramo who got the win despite giving up 10 hits and five runs while striking out just one in six innings. Lefty reliever Eric Stout was solid as he has been all year, working two and two-third innings while allowing just one run in the time to calm things down before Seth Maness earned the save by recording one out in the ninth with the bases loaded.

NW Arkansas Naturals 4 Tulsa Drillers 0

The Naturals finished off a four game sweep of the Tulsa Drillers to pull within a game clinching the first half division win.

In extra innings of the suspended game shortstop, Humberto Arteaga drove in Donnie Dewees after his leadoff double to give NW Arkansas a 3-2 lead. Reliever Sam Selman worked the final three innings with just two baserunners allowed to earn the win.

In the second game starter, Zach Lovvorn worked six and two-third scoreless innings before handing things off the Tim Hill to close things down. Infielder Corey Toups homered in the first and scored in the fifth on a Samir Duenez double to help put the Naturals up 2-0.

Outfielder Donnie Dewees tripled in Arteaga in the sixth before scoring himself on an errant throw for a little league home run. From there Hill finished off the final two and one-third innings perfect to secure the win.

The Blue Rocks continued their stellar pitching on Friday night to win another easy one, this time versus Salem.

Right-handed starter Scott Blewett put together likely the best start of his career, working six shutout innings. Dominating the Salem lineup that time while working around two singles and three walks by matching his career high with 10 strikeouts.

While Blewett was dominating the Wilmington offense was attacking, scoring seven runs from the second through the fifth. Infielder Wander Franco drove in a pair of runs with singles in the second and third innings.

Outfielder Anderson Miller paced the offense with three hits including a double and a triple while scoring one run and driving in another. The Carolina League All-Star has raised his average to .291 while improving his on-base percentage to .382 this season.

Reliever Matt Tenuta was just as strong as Blewett, working three perfect innings with six strikeouts to push the Rocks scoreless streak to 35.2 innings.

Omaha’s starter Luke Farrell was solid and a big insurance run in the ninth provided the necessary cushion for an Omaha win over Fresno. The Royals righthander gave up an unearned run in the first before getting on a roll that took him through 5.2 scoreless innings before turning things to the pen with a lead. That lead was built on two run fourth inning double by Hunter Dozier and a fifth inning RBI single by Dusty Coleman. They took a 3-1 scoreline into the ninth when a Bubba Starling sacrifice fly brought home Tony Cruz. That three run lead was just enough after Andrew Edwards gave up two runs before securing the save for Omaha.

The Nationals offense came up big in a win over Corpus Christi Wednesday. First baseman Ryan O’Hearn hit three run home runs in both the first and second inning as part of eight runs in the two innings for the Naturals. Three more runs for the home team backed things up during the 11-6 win that featured Jason Vargas in his first rehab appearance outside of Arizona. The Royals lefty worked 2.1 innings, giving up a pair of home runs as he allowed four hits in that time. In relief of Vargas, the Naturals used Ashton Goudeau and the righthander was up to the task, tossing one run ball over 5.1 innings to earn his fifth win at Double-A. The win kept NW Arkansas up in the standings by 1.5 games over Arkansas.

The Rocks and Nationals locked up in a pitching duel that ended with the Rocks securing a series win. Both team’s starters tossed shutout ball as Zach Lovvorn paced the Rocks with seven innings of scoreless pitching. Allowing just three hits with one walk, he was able to earn nine groundouts while striking out seven. The team’s two bullpens kept things quiet until the bottom of the ninth when a pair of no-out singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Wilmington. With the bases juiced, Elier Hernandez walked things off for the Rocks with a single to center to score Brien Bien.

The Chukars got off the schneid with a win thanks in part to a five-run sixth inning versus Billings. Trailing 4-1 into the bottom of the sixth, the Chukars plated five runs with a two-run double by Yeison Melo and a walk, with three singles to finish off the five run rally. The Mustangs threatened a couple more times with runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but tall lefty Cole Way was able to stomp out both rallies with the help of three strikeouts in the two innings to secure the win.

The Royals bullpen couldn’t match their starter’s effort during a loss to the D-Backs. Local boy Grant Gavin worked five scoreless innings while allowing four singles and no walks before leaving with a 1-0 lead. That lead, which came courtesy of a Nick Dini single to drive in Seuly Matias in the fourth inning, was short lived once the bullpen got involved. All three Royals relievers gave up at least one run with Michael Messier getting the worst of it with four runs allowed on a walk and three hits.

Alec Mills left after just one inning of work in which he gave up four runs and put Omaha in a hole they wouldn’t be able to dig out from. The injury was a stiff neck and may have lead to a performance that was less than stellar, giving up four hits and walking two. A pair of singles drove in three and a wild pitch scored the other run. The Chasers would get a pair in the first and a run in the sixth, both times to cut the deficit to two runs, but no closer in dropping the second of the four game series.

The Naturals received four innings of shutout relief plus a pair of extra base hits to take Sunday’s game. Outfielder Alfredo Escalera put NW Arkansas on the board first with a second inning two-run home run, his fifth of the season. Sprinfield would answer back with a pair of runs in the third inning, getting a sac fly from rehabbing Brandon Moss and a Luke Voit run-scoring single. The game would hold steady until the fifth when a pair of singles and a sac bunt put runners on second and third with one out for the Naturals. With Terrance Gore stepping in, the Cardinals would choose to intentionally walk him to play for the force at any base. Coming to the plate was the suddenly cool Corey Toups, hitting just 2 for 13 since coming back from the injury that cost him a few games and looking to find the hot hand that he was riding prior. Not looking to wait around, Toups jumped on the first pitch he saw, cracking a bases clearing double that put his team up 5-2. Those runs would be enough as the Naturals bullpen finished off the final four innings scoreless to secure the win to get back within a game of first place.

The two Carolina squads scored in just two of the nine innings, with Wilmington scoring enough to earn the win. The Keys started the game in the first with a single to take a 1-0 lead. The Rocks snapped right back in their half of the frame, getting RBI’s doubles from Anderson Miller, their second hitter of the game, and Brandon Downes to take a lead prior to Downes being brought around for a three-run frame. After three scoreless innings, Wilmington starter Zach Lovvorn struggled with the zone, hitting a batter and walking three with a single sandwiched in there to give up a pair of runs. He gave way to Jake Kalish who got the last out to keep the game tied at 3-3. It wouldn’t stay tied for long when Miller, leading off the inning, hit his second home run with the Blue Rocks to push the lead to 4-3. Three consecutive singles scored Brandon Downes and a wild pitch later scored Samir Duenez to push the Rocks lead to 6-3. From there the two teams would go silent which secured the Rocks second consecutive series win, they will go for a third consecutive series win for the first time this season when they face Salem next.

The Legends lost the game and series in Charleston when the offense went missing for the third time in the four game set. Just one run was pushed across on seven hits with the squad going one for six with runners in scoring position to let down starter Scott Blewett. The big righty worked six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks with a pair of doubles in the fourth and a double in the sixth helping account for the damage. Lexington would load the bases in the eighth and get two on with no outs in the ninth, but were unable to push a run across in either frame to take the loss.

Four Idaho Falls home runs powered the Chukars to a series-clinching win over Grand Junction yesterday. Things got started in the first when Yeison Melo and Manny Olloque went deep on back-to-back plate appearances to stake Idaho Falls to a 2-0 lead. After the Rockies had claimed a 4-2 lead with back-to-back two-run innings in the third and fourth before Idaho Falls grabbed the lead back in the fifth. Idaho Falls would plate four in that fifth while adding three more in the sixth with infielder Jordan Ebert singling and scoring in the fifth before hitting a two-run home run in the sixth. That sixth inning home run preceded a second Manny Olloque home run to give Idaho Falls a second back to back effort in the game. With the lead at 9-5 the two pitching staffs would slow things down, yielding just a run by the Rockies in the ninth prior to Idaho Falls ending things with another home win, pushing that home record to 18-5 on the season.

The Royals finished off their seventh win in a row with an assist from the weather against Bluefield in the first game of the two team’s series. The Blue Jays took an early 2-0 lead with a home run by Bradley Jones and a pair of wild pitches from starter Ofreidy Gomez that pushed around a walk that he had allowed. That 2-0 lead held up until the fourth inning when the Royals put together three consecutive one out singles to plate a run. With two on and one out Gabriel Cancel would walk in front of a pop out that placed the rally in danger with two down until, local product, Logan Gray lined a single to plate both Boo Vazquez and Vance Vizcaino to give Burlington a 3-2 lead. Following three quick outs by Gomez the rains came forcing the end of the game.

The Chasers offense couldn’t get a whole lot going during Sunday’s finale with Salt Lake. Omaha scored three runs on a pair of Raul Mondesi bloop singles but failed to push another run across after the fifth inning. The offense once again K’d with regularity, falling victim 11 times in 40 at bats. The two teams went to extra innings tied at three after piling up zeroes from the seventh inning on. It would last that way until the twelfth, when Miguel Almonte would balk in a run with the bases load prior to giving up a two-run double to allow three runs and eventually take the loss.

The top two teams in the Texas League North standings exchanged single tallies a couple times until extra innings in the opening game of their series. Josh Staumont made his first appearance for the Naturals with the hard-throwing righty tossing five innings of one run ball despite walking four and giving up five hits in that time. He found a couple of double plays in the first three innings of the game to avoid trouble. The contest was tied 2-2 until the 11th inning, when Naturals outfielder Logan Moon opened inning with a home run to left field that barely got over the wall to give NW Arkansas a 3-2 lead. Following another threat that came up empty for the Naturals, reliever Mark Peterson closed out the bottom half of the inning to earn the save. The win pushed the Naturals lead in the division to 1.5 games over Tulsa.

Starter Colin Rodgers couldn’t slow down the Lynchburg offense while he was on the mound, allowing 10 hits and five runs in 4.1 innings. The runs gave the lefty his seventh loss in nine decisions this year, while ballooning his ERA to 6.02. The Wilmington offense put together just five hits and two runs, one of which came via Samir Duenez’s sixth home run in 24 games at Wilmington. The 20 year old first baseman has a real chance to put together a 20/20 season having banked 20 stolen bases already.

Outfielder Roman Collins singled in a pair, while Burt and Amalani Fukofuka added the other two runs on their singles in the inning. Daniel Concepcion allowed the grand slam after Franco Terrero had loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth. Starter Yunior Marte earned the win with 5.1 innings of one run pitching with six strikeouts.

Zephyrs starter Chris Reed wasn’t the same pitcher that shutdown the Chasers earlier in the month as Omaha got to him for four runs. His struggles with control cost him five walks in four innings. The Chasers tacked on three more walks and 10 total hits to plate six runs on the evening while their starter, Alec Mills navigated around three of his own walks. It was Mills’ first Triple-A start in homer-prone Werner Park, but the righty was able to keep the ball in the yard and collected eight groundouts. Third baseman Hunter Dozier snapped out of his home struggles, going 2 for 3 with a double.

Eric Skoglund put together his best start of the year while the Naturals bottom half of the lineup lead the way to a win. The lefty worked seven innings, allowing just four singles and not a single walk, giving up just an unearned run to the Drillers. While Skoglund was spinning, the 5-9 hitters in the lineup combined for 10 hits including three home runs, accounting for all six Naturals runs. First baseman Frank Schwindel did much of the damage, hitting a pair of solo home runs and scoring a run after a double. Shortstop Jack Lopez hit a three-run home run, his fifth of the season.

The Rocks pitching staff tossed a gem and got enough offense late to take game two in the series. Starter Corey Ray was solid, giving up just two hits and a run while navigating around three walks. Reliever Jake Newberry continued his outstanding season with two scoreless as opponents continue to hit below .200 against him on the season. A pair of doubles in the fifth by Elier Hernandez and Cody Jones got Wilmington on the board to tie the game. Austin Bailey lead off the seventh with a triple prior to scoring, and a Brandon Downes double scored Samir Duenez in the eighth. Reliever Derek Gordon finished off his fourth save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Hagerstown Suns 3 Lexington Legends 1

The two teams combined to go 2-23 with runners in scoring position as the Suns did just enough to take game one. Lexington starter Scott Blewett tossed a complete game, working 96 pitches with doubles allowed in the second, third and fourth helping the opponent score a run in each inning. The Legends put runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings but were able to plate just one run.

Lexington went just 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position while connecting on just one extra base hit to also drop game two. Overall, the Legends went just 2 for 19 with runners in scoring position to drop both games.

The Chukars were helped by three Grand Junction errors in the eighth to put four runs on the board in breaking a 2-2 tie. Tanner Stanley and Yeison Melo had the big knocks in the inning, plating three of the four runs while the other came via a groundout. Despite just three strikeouts on the night, the three Idaho Falls pitchers were able to hold Grand Junction to just two runs thanks to a pair of outfield assist and a two double plays that dwarfed Rockies rallies.

Plenty of home runs in this ugly Royals game with the two teams combining for six long balls. Unfortunately for the Royals their two home runs came with no one on and the four for the Rays came with seven combined baserunners to account for 11 of their 16 runs. All four Burlington pitchers gave up at least one home run and at least three runs to drop to 0-2. Just four hits for the good guys with Chris DeVito and Zane Evans both leaving the yard.

Dominican Ismael Maldonado had a rough night, giving up eight hits and eight runs in just 2.2 innings to put the Arizona squad in a 9-0 hole. The Royals plated five in the fifth to climb within a respectable deficit but couldn’t close the gap as the Reds tacked on an insurance run in the ninth.
