A rough day for the organization between the Royals loss, Raul Mondesi’s suspension, and the affiliates going 0-4.

Memphis Redbirds 7, Omaha Storm Chasers 1
Another bludgeoning as the Redbirds knocked around the Chasers in game one of their series. A 1-0 game in the 6th turned into a 7-0 deficit when Brooks Pounders and Brian Duensing couldn’t get out of the inning. A pair of walks by Pounders sandwiched around a double loaded the bases; manager Brian Poldberg turned to Duensing to try to limit the damage. That move didn’t quite work, as the lefty surrendered a pair of doubles and four singles to allow six runs in the frame. Those runs were plenty to put the game out of reach with the only run the Chasers were able to muster came via a Jorge Bonifacio solo home run, his sixth of the season.
Whit Merrifield 1-4, 2b
Dusty Coleman 1-4, 2b
Brooks Pounders 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Arkansas Travelers 5 NW Arkansas Naturals 4
The Naturals build a 4-0 lead only to see the bats go cold and drop the series finale at Arkansas on Tuesday. First baseman Ryan O’Hearn got the game started with an opposite-field single to drive in Ramon Torres in the first. It was Torres driving in the Naturals second run of the game in the second with a single to center to bring around Logan Moon who had doubled. A Cam Gallagher two-run double pushed the advantage to 4-0 and from there the bats went cold and starter Mike Minor hit a wall in his first rehab start. The former Atlanta Braves lefty was smooth through the first two innings, mowing down the first six hitters on 21 pitches with four strikeouts. In the third, Minor struggled to find the zone in a similar outing to Kyle Zimmer’s first rehab start, likely a result of fatigue. Minor walked the bases loaded prior to a single, a sacrifice fly and an error before being lifted after his last walk. All told, there were plenty of positives for Minor and some stuff he obviously will have to improve. Reliever Eric Stout took the loss when he gave up a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. The Naturals lost the game when pinch-runner Carlos Garcia was gunned down at the plate in the top of the ninth.
Ramon Torres 2-5, R, RBI
Ryan O’Hearn 1-4, RBI
Mike Minor 2.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
Frederick Keys 3 Wilmington Blue Rocks 0
Starter Josh Staumont worked into the seventh inning of his start versus Frederick, staying efficient despite three walks and just three strikeouts on the evening. The righty took the loss due the Rocks lack of offense but baby steps are nice for the flame-throwing former 3rd round pick. It was Staumont’s wildness that lead to the first run of the evening when he uncorked a wild pitch with a runner on the third. The Keys homered in the second, Staumont’s first allowed on the young season, and then a run-scoring single expanded the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. On the night he tossed 57 of his 98 pitches in the strikezone while dropping to 0-3 on the year. Wilmington’s offense went 0-4 with runners in scoring position to drop to just 9-21 on the year.
Elier Hernandez 1-3, 2b
Chad Johnson 1-2, 2b, BB
Brandon Downs 1-3, OF Assist
Greensboro Grasshoppers 7 Lexington Legends 5
Once again, Foster Griffin couldn’t stop the bleeding after a defensive error, leading to a big inning for Greensboro and a loss for Lexington. The lefty was on cruise control through the first four innings when a pair of singles and a double scored one for the Grasshoppers prior to a bunt which loaded the bases. After getting a strikeout it appeared Griffin was going to limit the damage to just the one run when a fielding error by shortstop Marten Gasparini allowed the inning to continue. Griffin couldn’t corral things from there. The lefty allowed two more singles sandwiched around a steal of home before being relieved by Nik Stephenson, who allowed a double to finish off Foster’s line. Going into that inning Lexington had built a 4-0 lead on a Xavier Fernandez home run and two-run double by Chase Vallot. The Legends would threaten with the bases loaded in the ninth but Fernandez hit into a double play to end their day.
Samir Duenez 2-5
Foster Griffin 4.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Chase Vallot 1-4, 2b, 2 RBI, BB
